Behind every zine is a much bigger story ✂️📚

Independent publishing doesn’t happen in isolation — it’s shaped by print studios, publishers, art book fairs, libraries, collectives, and communities that keep ideas moving from one pair of hands to another. 🤲

In the book‘s “Behind the Zine” section, we spotlight some of the people and platforms helping zine culture thrive today: from the vibrant Risograph experiments of RISOTTO , to the publishing worlds of Hato Press and Nieves Books , community-driven spaces like Raum Für Illustration and ZINE COOP , and global meeting points such as Tokyo Art Book Fair and PageMasters .co.

Together, they reveal how zines are more than printed objects — they are networks of collaboration, care, experimentation, and shared enthusiasm. 🌍

Swipe through to meet some of the people keeping independent publishing alive - and read the rest in A Book on Zines, available first on victionary.com! 📓

7 to Rewire Your Creative Mind 🧠

What happens when a publication becomes a eulogy, a seaside diary, an archive of cracker labels, or an observation of laundry hanging out to dry? What if a zine arrived disguised as a box of food, or transformed overlooked railings into experimental furniture?

From In The Name Of The Father, a moving tribute to family and remembrance, to Grafis Nusantara Vol.2, which preserves Indonesia’s overlooked graphic heritage, and Hang, where improvised drying racks become accidental urban compositions — these works challenge how stories are documented and shared. Elsewhere, miniature ceramic fèves, quiet reflections on self-improvement, solitary walks by the sea, and unnoticed details of city infrastructure become subjects worthy of entire publications.

Swipe through 7 zines featured in A Book on Zines that remind us creativity often lives in the specific, the strange, and the deeply personal. ✨

A Book on Zines was designed with the same question often ask: what if publishing felt a little more human? ✂️📎

A sister to A Book on Books, the cover echoes its familiar structure. This time, swapping polished stacks for a pile of zines scattered across a cutting mat, nodding to all the trimming, stapling, folding, and making behind independent publishing. Wrapped in craft paper, the book carries the warmth of something ; a small tribute to rough edges, DIY spirit, and works made with intention rather than perfection.

Besides being a collection of independent publications that we know and love, A Book on Zines also spotlights the people, spaces, and communities keeping culture alive today. 📓

The Behind the Zine section explores four sides of the ecosystem: from Production & Process with Risotto Studio, to Publishing & Platforms with Nieves and Hato Press; Events & Exposure through initiatives like Tokyo Art Book Fair and Pagemasters; and Culture & Community, featuring spaces such as Raum für Illustration and ZINE COOP.

The book also includes a specially curated global zine map at the back, cataloguing , festivals, and events worldwide for readers looking to dive deeper into culture. 🌍

A Book on Zines — New Aesthetics in Zine Design

Small in scale, but full of ideas — zines have always been spaces for experimentation, self-expression, and making without permission. Passed between friends, discovered at book fairs, or tucked into bags and shelves, they capture thoughts and stories in ways that feel deeply personal. 📓

A Book on Zines celebrates independent creators reshaping contemporary publishing through bold visuals, unusual formats, material play, and honest storytelling. Featuring zines from around the world alongside conversations with artists, designers, publishers, and curators, the book explores why this humble format continues to matter.

From accordion books and archival projects to tactile objects disguised as everyday packaging, these pages are filled with works that challenge what publishing can look and feel like.

A companion to A Book on Books, and a source of inspiration for anyone who loves print, independent publishing, and creative experimentation.

Courage. Curiosity. Playfulness. Persistence.

At the heart of Cowards Don’t Go To Heaven are eight habits Eugene Cheong believes sustain a creative life — not through certainty or talent alone, but through instinct, conviction, idealism, and continuing despite doubt.

These pages aren’t rules to follow, but reflections shaped by four decades in , creativity, failure, and reinvention. Accompanied by Simon Spilsbury’s expressive illustrations, they offer something rarer than advice: perspective.

Which habit speaks to you most?

Some books give answers. Cowards Don’t Go To Heaven asks harder questions.

What keeps a creative going after decades of doubt, failure, reinvention, and success? What’s worth holding onto — like courage, instinct, and idealism — when the industry rewards certainty?

Flip through Eugene Cheong’s brutally honest reflections on creativity, accompanied by 71 illustrations from Simon Spilsbury . Equal parts manifesto, memoir, and beautifully chaotic notebook, this is a book to revisit whenever you need some perspective — or just a push!

Cowards Don’t Go To Heaven
The Scribblings of A Lost Creative Soul Who Found Paradise

What happens when four decades in advertising collide with faith, failure, instinct, humour, and hard-earned creative truths? Eugene Cheong turns it into a manifesto that’s unapologetic, wildly honest, and impossible to neatly categorise.

Accompanying the writing are 71 illustrations by Simon Spilsbury , whose expressive, offbeat visuals punctuate the chaos and bring another layer of wit and humanity to the pages.

Part survival guide, part memoir, part creative provocation — Cowards Don’t Go To Heaven is for anyone trying to make meaningful work without losing themselves along the way.
