Born out of the founder’s passion for travel and the exotic, the online shop is filled with wonderfully unusual pieces that speak of times gone by. T H O R N & B U R R O W was created in Hong Kong by our founder who has been living, travelling and working in Asia ever since. Her love of design and interiors sparked the opening of our first brick and mortar shop. Our style is about layering textures and styles from different eras and places to create interesting interiors.

A warm glow fills our shop, cast by the beautiful lamps from The Ginger Jar Lamp Co. | Kate Sbuttoni

Now, let us shine a light on these gorgeous ginger jars and their founder, Kate Sbuttoni. She discovered ginger jars by chance and turned stillness into light.

In 2016, while wandering an antiques market in Zhuhai, China, Kate stumbled upon a collection of vintage, hand-painted ginger jars. Something clicked. She looked at them and wondered, “What if I turned one into a lamp?” A whim. A whisper of an idea. A what-if.

That what-if became The Ginger Jar Lamp Co. She paired traditional Chinese ceramics with vibrant, artisan-made lampshades - blending vintage and contemporary jars with colorful fabrics hand-sourced across Asia, creating limited-edition lamps and home accessories people adore.

And here’s what makes us proudest - we carry her line right here in our little shop. Every ginger jar we place on our shelves, every one of her lamps we turn on in our shop, shares a piece of her story with you. Knowing the heart she pours into every piece, makes it all the more meaningful.

Because it all traces back to one market stall, one jar, and one bright idea - and we’re so proud to be part of where that idea has led.

Some artists capture a place. Louise Hill captures its soul. From the very first piece we ever sold, her work has been the heartbeat of our little shop. Back then, we were just starting out - but we knew, even then, that her art was something rare. She was our One from Day 1.

What inspires her? The city itself. She walks the city and falls in love, over and over again - with the grit, the glow, the beautiful mess of it all. She sees poetry in the clutter, romance in the chaos.

And that love? It pours into every layer of her work. She sketches by hand, photographs the ordinary, then weaves it all together in her own unique style of multilayered imagery. Weeks, sometimes months, for one piece. Because she refuses to rush a love letter to the city she sets her heart on.

That’s why her art still flies off our walls, over 10 years later. Because when you hang a Louise Hill artwork on your wall, you’re not buying a print.
