Batik Motif Arjuna Wiwaha

Arjuna Wiwaha berarti “Perkawinan Arjuna”. Syair epis ini ditulis oleh Mpu Kanwa yg menurut dugaan, hidup pada zamannya Raja Airlangga, raja di Jawa Timur sekitar th. 1019-1042. Airlangga merupakan seorang raja yg tersohor yg merencanakan peperangan. Untuk mempersiapkan diri secara mental ia mengundurkan diri dari masyarakat dan bertapa. Kemudian hari dia kembali dari pertapaannya dan mengabdikan diri kepada kesejahteraan kerajaannya. Umum berpendapat, bahwa Mpu Kanwa mempersembahkan karyanya kepada raja Airlangga. Untuk menghormati raja itu ia melukiskan kekuasaannya dgn mengambil arjuna sebagai contoh. Hal ihwal Arjuna mencerminkan kehidupan Airlangga…

Sebetulnya Arjuna itu salah satu tokoh dari Maha Bharata. Di situlah di ceritakan, bagaimana Arjuna menjalankan tapa brata di salah satu bukit di pegunungan Himalaya dgn maksud untuk memperoleh kesaktian lalu memerangi para gandarwa.

Dalam kakawin pun kita berjumpa dgn seorang pangeran Arjuna yg menjalankan tapa brata. Tetapi yg menarik perhatian disini ialah tujuannya yg lebih bersifat manusiawi. Tujuan tapa brata Arjuna Wiwaha bukanlah untuk menaklukkan kekuasaan jahat daripada Gandarwa, melainkan memberikan bantuan kepada keluarga yg di cintainya, agar mereka dapat menaklukkan dunia..
