You might look at a kitchen and immediately notice the cabinetry, worktops or beautiful finishes.

As an interior designer, I'm looking at everything happening around them.

How will you move through the space?
Is there enough storage for the way your family actually lives?
Does the lighting work where you need it?
Are the proportions right?
How does the kitchen connect visually with the rooms around it?
And will all of those decisions still make sense once they're brought together?

These are the details that can be difficult to see when you're making one decision at a time — but they have an enormous impact on how your finished kitchen will look, feel and function.

One of the biggest reasons house renovations become overwhelming isn't because there are too many decisions.

It's because there isn't a clear plan guiding those decisions. Without a roadmap, every choice feels like a gamble.

Will these finishes work together? Is this the right layout? Will I regret this in six months?

Before long, decision fatigue sets in, stress builds, and what should be an exciting project starts to feel overwhelming. That's why every project I take on begins with a clear design plan.

One of the biggest misconceptions about interior design is that we just choose colours, furniture and décor.

In reality, that's only a small part of the process.

A large part of my role happens behind the scenes, collaborating with architects and builders, planning layouts, reviewing drawings, coordinating design decisions and helping my clients navigate what can often feel like an overwhelming process.

Because when you have a clear plan from the beginning, everything else falls into place.
