Just in a fantastic bronze by Conor Fallon (B1939-2007)
Born in Dublin to Padraic Fallon, the Irish poet and playwright and Dorothea Maher, the family later moved to Wexford where Fallon grew up. Fallon studied Natural Sciences at Trinity in the late 1950s and it was during his time at university that he began painting. He wanted to concentrate on his artistic career and so leaving college, he made a compromise with his father that he would do an accountancy degree part-time. A career he did not need to fall back, as his talent continued to develop first under Richard Kingston before he turned his attention to sculpture, the medium he work predominantly in for the rest of his career. He traveled to the artist community of St Ives in Cornwall with his friend and fellow Irish artist Tony O’Malley. There he met Denis Mitchell, the British abstract sculptor who went on to become an important mentor for Fallon. He became known for his cast steel and bronze works of birds, hares, fish. While in Cornwall he met artist Nancy-Wynne Jones. They married in 1966 and moved to Kinsale in 1972 with their two children. The Taylor Galleries in Dublin held regular exhibitions of his work. In 1980 Fallon was awarded the Oireachtas gold medal for sculpture. He became an honorary associate of the NCAD in 1993. He was secretary of the RHA, becoming a full member in 1989, and on the board of the National Gallery of Ireland. Fallon was also a member of Aosdána.
