Vol. Seamus Costello “The Boy General”
- Drawing on wood with fineliner and pencil
This piece will be Raffled off tomorrow in the Teachers Club as part of the Seamus Costello Memorial weekend organized by the Seamus Costello Memorial Committee. The event will consist of the annual Vol. Seamus Costello memorial lecture and a talk titled “Is an Anti-Imperialist broad front possible” featuring prominent Republican speakers.
For those that aren’t familiar with the work of Seamus Costello he was the founder of the Irish Republican Socialist Party and the Irish National Liberation Army. He earned the nickname “The Boy General” when being just a teenager he led an active service unit of the IRA on several successful engagements in the border campaign of the 1950s. He was shot in 1977 by counter-revolutionaries, the only leader of an Irish political party to ever be assassinated.
Nora Connolly O’Brien, James Connolly’s daughter, gave his funeral oration - “Of all the politicians and political people with whom I have had conversations, and who called themselves followers of Connolly, he was the only one that truly understood what James Connolly meant when he spoke of his vision of the freedom of the Irish people.”
