Hewn

Hewn I make wooden utensils, intended for daily use, from roundwood collected locally. I make nice things from trees, things to use and fall in love with.

Whenever I’m unsure of myself, I wonder does what I do matter? Why do I do this silly job anyway?

I think spoons symbolise nurturing and comfort, love shared through food. Also, I don’t want to give in to the machines and the AI and the 3D Printers…

Having the right tool makes such a difference and, having carved thousands of spoons and used many knives, I feel confident in saying I know what makes a good spoon knife!

Can you name the four different woods in this image? One is tricky…

At least 100 years as a living oak tree in the US, 3 years as a bourbon barrel, at least 5 years as a whiskey barrel in Ireland. Now, a spoon to feed yourself. On top of all of that, it’s one of the rarest materials in the universe. If that’s not cool, then what is?

What’s a day of spoon carving with me like? Link in bio to book.

A lovely few days of knifey steely SCIENCE nerding with , a most knowledgeable and gentlemanly person. There’s nothing like some practical testing to decide on the steel and heat treatment for my spoon knives. We also discussed sharpening techniques, edge geometry and all sorts.

Many craftspeople, rather than maximising their output, end up either focussing on teaching, or tending towards making a small number of elaborate pieces that attract a high price and/or accolades at craft competitions. This is very understandable. It’s not easy to gain either money or recognition through regular old hard graft in manual craft manufacturing. And it’s tough on the body. Even so, I’ve always leaned more towards the production end of the spectrum, making lots of more utilitarian pieces: as many as I can. Never as many as I’d like. Every new person who’s out there using and enjoying one of my spoons is an accolade to me. The more the better. That’s a physical thing I’ve brought into existence that has an effect on people. That’s satisfying to me.

I’ve produced and sold a lot of spoons in the last two months. Here’s just a few ‘Ultimate Cooking Spoons’ and some large serving spoons.
