A beautiful sofa can catch your eye, but there’s a lot more I’m looking at before I’d recommend one for a client’s home.

When I’m sofa shopping, I’m thinking about:

→ Scale: does it actually suit the proportions of the room?
→ Dimensions: will there still be enough space to move comfortably around it?
→ Comfort: because looking beautiful isn’t enough if nobody wants to sit on it.
→ Fabric: how will it wear, clean and cope with everyday life?
→ Construction: I’m checking the frame, legs, back and overall quality.
→ The wider room: how will it work with the layout, other furniture, materials and overall design?

The right sofa isn’t necessarily the one that looks best on the showroom floor. It’s the one that works beautifully in your home and for the way you actually live.

Save this for your next sofa-shopping trip.
