☀️ SOLAR PV — START WITH A PLAN
Solar panels can be a great investment, but the best systems are designed around the home, the roof and how the electricity will actually be used.
Before choosing panels or an inverter, it’s worth looking at the full picture:
✅ Roof suitability — orientation, pitch, available space and shading all matter
✅ Your electricity use — the system should suit how and when you use power
✅ Inverter selection — correctly matched to the array and future requirements
✅ Battery storage — useful in the right home, but not automatically necessary for everyone
✅ Future plans — EV charging, heat pumps or other upgrades can influence the design
✅ Safe installation & paperwork — proper isolation, protection, testing and grid documentation are part of the job
A good solar installation isn’t about fitting the biggest system possible. It’s about designing the right system for the property and making sure every part works together.

FIRE SAFETY STARTS BEFORE THE FINISHING TOUCHES 🏡
A beautiful renovation should do more than look good. It should make your home safer, too.
Smoke and heat alarms are easy to overlook when you're planning a new kitchen, updating rooms or carrying out a larger renovation. But getting them right early can save disruption later.
Here are four things worth considering:
✅ Interlinked alarms — When one alarm activates, the connected alarms sound too, helping the warning reach people throughout the home.
✅ The right alarm in the right place — Smoke alarms are suitable for many living and circulation areas, while heat alarms are generally better suited to kitchens.
✅ Plan before plastering — Consider alarm locations, wiring and suitable backup power arrangements alongside the rest of the electrical work.
✅ Keep them working — Test and maintain alarms according to the manufacturer's instructions. An alarm only helps if it works when needed.
Fire detection, escape routes and the layout of your home should all be considered as part of a well-planned renovation.

🏠 ATTIC CONVERSIONS — DONE RIGHT FROM THE START.

An attic conversion can completely change how your home works — adding valuable extra space without extending the footprint of the house.

But the best results come from planning the whole job together, not treating each trade separately.

A few things worth getting right early:
✅ Lighting & power — plan sockets, switches, lighting and data points before finishes begin
✅ Insulation & ventilation — keep the space warm, efficient and properly ventilated
✅ Fire safety — smoke alarms, escape considerations and appropriate fire protection need to be thought through
✅ Stairs & layout — good access and sensible use of the available space make a huge difference
✅ Finishing — plastering, painting, flooring, carpentry and electrical details should all work together for a clean result

A well-planned attic can become a bedroom, office, hobby room, storage area or simply much more useful living space.

🌙 OUTDOOR LIGHTING DOES MORE THAN JUST LOOK GOOD!

Well-planned outdoor lighting can completely change how your home feels after dark — while also making it safer and more practical.
A good setup can help with:

✅ Safer paths and steps — improving visibility around entrances, driveways and garden areas
✅ Added security — a well-lit exterior can help deter unwanted visitors
✅ Better kerb appeal — highlighting stonework, planting and architectural features
✅ More usable outdoor space — making patios, paths and garden areas easier to enjoy in the evenings
✅ Energy efficiency — modern LED fittings give great light output with low running costs.

The key is getting the right fittings in the right places, rather than simply adding more lights.
If you’re thinking about upgrading your outdoor lighting, get in touch with Kerry Electrical & Home Renovations.

🔌 DON’T OVERLOAD YOUR SOCKETS

With TVs, chargers, kitchen appliances, heaters and all the other electrical equipment we use every day, it’s easy to end up with too many devices running from one socket.

But extension leads and multi-plug adaptors don’t increase the amount of power the circuit can safely provide.

A few simple precautions can make a big difference:

✅ Avoid plugging one extension lead into another
✅ Be particularly careful with high-powered appliances such as heaters
✅ Never use a plug, socket or extension lead that feels unusually warm
✅ Watch for burning smells, buzzing or discolouration
✅ If you constantly need extension leads, consider having additional fixed sockets installed

A shortage of sockets is better solved properly than worked around permanently.
If you need additional sockets, electrical alterations or would like something checked,

🏠 INSULATING THE ATTIC? CHECK THE DOWNLIGHTS FIRST.

Adding or upgrading attic insulation is a great way to improve comfort and reduce heat loss — but it’s important to check what’s already sitting in the ceiling before everything gets covered.
Older recessed downlights can run hot, and not every fitting is suitable to have insulation packed around it.

A few things worth checking:
✅ Make sure the downlights are suitable for contact with insulation
✅ Keep drivers, transformers and electrical connections accessible
✅ Look for any signs of overheating, browning or scorching
✅ If older fittings are due an upgrade, it’s much easier to do it before the insulation goes down
✅ During a renovation, plan the electrical work and insulation together

Good insulation and good electrical work should complement each other — not create problems for one another.

🔥 WHEN DID YOU LAST TEST YOUR SMOKE ALARMS?
Smoke alarms are easy to forget about because, most of the time, they sit quietly on the ceiling doing nothing. But when you need them, those first few seconds of warning really matter.
A quick home check is worth doing:
✅ Press the test button and make sure each alarm sounds
✅ Check for any low-battery warning or fault indication
✅ Keep alarms free from dust, paint and obstruction
✅ Check the replacement date recommended by the manufacturer
✅ If you’re renovating or upgrading, consider interlinked alarms so one alarm can alert the whole home
If an alarm is damaged, unreliable or overdue for replacement, don’t put it off.

⚡ THINKING ABOUT AN EV CHARGER AT HOME?
A dedicated home EV charger can make everyday driving far more convenient. Instead of relying on public charging, you can plug in at home and have the car ready when you need it.
A few things worth considering before installation:
✅ Your existing electrical supply and consumer unit should be checked first
✅ The charger needs the correct protective devices and cable sizing
✅ Location matters — think about where the car is normally parked and cable reach
✅ Smart charging can help you make use of lower-cost electricity periods where your tariff allows
✅ The installation should be planned around the home, not just the charger itself
For many homeowners, the real benefit is simple: plug in when you get home, charge while the car is parked, and start the next day ready to go.

🌫️ BATHROOM STAYING STEAMY LONG AFTER THE SHOWER?
If mirrors, walls and ceilings stay wet for ages after a shower, your bathroom extractor fan may not be doing enough.
A few simple checks can help:
✅ Make sure the fan actually comes on when it should
✅ Clean dust from the grille so airflow isn’t restricted
✅ Check that the outside vent isn’t blocked
✅ Consider a fan with a run-on timer or humidity control
✅ If the room still holds heavy moisture, the fan may be undersized or poorly ducted
Good ventilation helps protect paintwork, ceilings and fittings — and makes the bathroom much more comfortable to use.
If your extractor fan is noisy, weak, not working properly, or you’re renovating a bathroom, get in touch with Kerry Electrical & Home Renovations.

🚿 SHOWER PULL CORD FEELING DIFFERENT? DON’T IGNORE IT.

Electric shower pull-cord switches can give warning signs before they fail. If yours suddenly becomes stiff, unusually warm, noisy, smells burnt, or shows brown marks/discolouration, it’s worth getting it checked.
A few simple signs to watch for:

A cord that is harder to pull than usual
Heat around the switch or ceiling fitting
Buzzing, crackling or a burning smell
Scorching or discolouration.

A switch that only works intermittently
If something doesn’t feel right, stop using the shower and arrange an inspection. Catching a small electrical fault early is always better than waiting for it to become a bigger problem.
