Studio 'andblack'

Studio 'andblack' andblack design studio is a young architectural firm based in Ahmedabad, led by Jwalant Mahadevwala

The inception of andblack design studio happened in a small flat in London in the cold winters of 2009. After few competitions, unrealised projects and some collaborative work the studio moved to India in 2011. Since then the new setup in Ahmedabad is focusing on projects of all scales ranging from master planning, bridge design, residential towers, farm houses, factories, interiors and every inte

resting design problem that comes our way. Our expertise ranges from urban design and architecture to art installations and sculptures. The philosophy lies in designing the process that leads to the ‘solution’. We believe that the design process should be robust enough to inform all stages of design, from concept to detailing. We constantly challenge ourselves to rethink these processes to suit the project. andblack design studio has in its core to achieve energy efficient buildings that deploy intelligent systems and use natural materials where possible. We strongly believe in collaborative work and for every project we try and bring in individuals having relevant expertise in different aspects of design and construction. We pride ourselves in conceiving and delivering projects that can be both iconic and meaningful.

When we started working on a light inspired by indigo, we became very intrigued by the image of a guchcha of threads getting dyed in indigo.

Each thread absorbed the dye differently, creating subtle variations in tonality. We wanted to translate this inspiration into wood.

The design emerged as a cluster, ‘a Guchha’ of wooden elements bent and gathered together around a central brass piece. Each wooden strand was dyed with indigo, allowing the natural variations of the dye to appear across the surface.

The entire geometry of the piece is an attempt to emulate the way a bunch of indigo dyed threads come together in a Guchha.

GUCHHA is a study of tension and release, where wood loosens its rigidity and light becomes a collaborator in form. Form here is not imposed but emerges through repetition and accumulation, where the bunched linear wooden components collectively define the volume.

Operating between object and installation, this chandelier is defined by material exploration, calibrated tension, and an enduring focus on craft as a process.

It always so good to be part of India Design. The entire fraternity comes together to celebrate and to make their presence felt in some way of the other. It’s truly the most sort after weekend for designers in India.

As we sat down to make yet another Jhoola, we paused to look back at the journey. The evolution of these four iterations of the LOOP Jhoola has been deeply satisfying.

Experimenting with the Loop has now become second nature to us.A single material, expressed through a single continuous curve that is compact yet comfortable.

Designed to bring life to that forgotten corner, the LOOP jhoola adds movement, character and a sense of playfulness to the space.

As seen in the GIF are -

LOOP twisted Jhoola
LOOP spiral Jhoola

When the sculptural LOOP quad becomes a seat for contemplation, and the mood is quietly set by the slow, steady lines of the LOOP ripple chandelier and the RAY barrel lamp, the space begins to speak in one language.

The LOOP quad holds a strong architectural language, grounded, fluid, and unapologetically expressive.
More than a bench, it sits as a statement, anchoring the room while inviting pause, interaction, and experience.

Some pieces are not just placed together, they are meant to come together to complete a story.

A freely suspended, organic twist in motion.

Like a coiled line captured mid-air,
its fluid path brings a quiet sensuality to the space.

Sculptural and dynamic, it reveals its full character when placed in a corner, suspended from the ceiling where light, form, and movement meet in a single gesture.
