Working in kochi made me love terracotta clay and the rich color it gives. And this terracotta vase was part of the knotted bloom collection , one where tulip flowers were sculpted and flowed right into the ridges of the vase.
If you ask me do I think of the shape before sculpting and do I have a shape in mind. I think it's a yes and a no. A vague idea of the shape, or rather a vague idea of how it should feel when I look at it but otherwise it's mostly the feel of each coil attached. And that's my favorite part of the process. Constantly a collaboration with the material itself.i look at it from different angles and see how I can get different facades to it. A little surprise in every turn.
