Kailasa Temple, Ellora - where devotion defeated gravity and time. It is carved not built, a mountain transformed into divinity.

✨ 1 rock
✨ 1 temple
✨ An eternal masterpiece

Cave 16, known as the Kailasa Temple, is the largest and most magnificent cave at Ellora.
It was commissioned in the 8th century CE by Rashtrakuta king Krishna I and is dedicated to Lord Shiva, representing Mount Kailash, Shiva’s heavenly abode.
What makes the Kailasa Temple extraordinary is that it was carved entirely from a single basalt rock, using a top-down excavation method. Over 200,000 tons of rock were removed — without modern tools, cranes, or machinery.
The temple complex includes:
A massive Nandi mandapa
Intricately carved pillars, friezes, and panels
Sculptures depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata
Detailed carvings of Shiva, Parvati, Ravana, and other deities
Despite centuries of weathering and attempted destruction, the temple still stands as a symbol of India’s unmatched architectural and spiritual legacy.
👉 It is not just a temple — it is engineering, art, devotion, and ambition frozen in stone.

Checking off the back of my ₹20 note today!

📍Standing in front of the monolithic Kailasa Temple, I’m blown away by the fact that this entire structure was chiselled out of one single stone. History truly comes alive here.

It is said that 2,00,000 tonnes of rock were removed to create this temple. It represents Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva.
The new greenish-yellow ₹20 note was introduced by the RBI in 2019 to celebrate India's cultural heritage.
