The clients were clear from the start: the kitchen had to be the heart of the home. They wanted a space that encouraged togetherness, where family and friends could effortlessly gather, much like in their Boston home.
The kitchen, alongside the dining and living room, features a white colour scheme on the cabinets, adding to the light and dark theme of the home. The colors of the light above the kitchen island are inspired by the couple’s cherished Murano glass artefact. Its fluid design and vibrant colours make it a striking centrepiece, affirming the kitchen’s role as the heart of the home. Storage was consciously designed to blend seamlessly with the open kitchen layout, ensuring practicality while maintaining a chic, clutter-free aesthetic.

The living room is monochromatic, drenched in light cascading over the scene. The choice of monotones, particularly cool grey tones, serves a dual purpose: accentuating the lush greenery of the outdoor garden and creating a calm, cohesive backdrop for the curated art and sculptures. This palette ensures that each piece, from furniture to artwork, stands out while retaining a sense of continuity throughout the spaces.
Seepi, a wall light sculpture by Sailesh Rajput, casts soft hues into the space, while an Olie pendant in the living room’s reading corner complements the artistic sensibilities of the space.

At the entrance, textured basalt walls create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout the day. They morph under varying light conditions, bringing a lively, organic quality to the spaces. These walls add a sculptural and lithic essence, creating depth and a tactile experience that contrasts beautifully with the smooth finishes of other materials. The Serpentine chair by Escape Creatomy, meticulously chosen for its sculptural appeal, sets the tone for the home.

The material palette is thoughtfully layered to balance natural textures and colours. A cool grey marble floor works in harmony with textured basalt stone, while the grey monotones serve to highlight the lush green outdoor space and maximise natural light. The choice of stone and inlay patterns carved into it not only lends the space an artistic timeless elegance, but also defines pauses throughout the space, offering an intimate exploration of the textures. The stoic nature of the stone is softened by fluid furniture shapes and organic textiles, adding much needed warmth and comfort to the space.

Where Boston Meets Bangalore

Matching global aspirations to local traditions has become a hallmark of contemporary designs, where spaces are shaped not just by personal histories but broader cultural influences as well. Renata is an embodiment of this fusion. Home to Prof. Das, a Harvard Business School Professor, and his wife, Sunitha, it is a reflection of the couple’s daily routines, their intellectual personalities and their lifestyle that spans continents. Its design, rooted in Bangalore’s artistic spirit and informed by Bostonian sensibilities for modern and functional spaces, celebrates this duality, giving Renata both cosmopolitan yet intimately personal touch.
