A small addition to a home we designed for our dear client, Rajini Padmanaban.

The brief was to create an extension that could function as a home office as well as an additional room. We designed an airy space filled with natural light and ventilation, while being mindful of the harsh sun and avoiding a typical “glass box” effect through a thoughtful play of walls and windows. A small outdoor porch was added to enhance the transition between indoors and outdoors. Simple roofing and jet-black flooring lend character and grounding to the home.

The story behind the Pillars of Marakadham

When we first started designing this home, Iswarya had one simple request—there had to be a Chettinad style pillar in the home. As we planned, a "thinnai" alongside a single pillar at the kitchen entryway felt like the perfect touch.

The 3Ds were done, working drawings detailed, and everything was set in motion. And then, I got that call from Iswarya: "One pillar isn’t auspicious; they must always come in pairs."

For a moment, I was worried. Would this shift impact the design? Would we have to start from scratch? But in my usual optimistic spirit, I simply said, why not?

I firmly believe that a home should reflect its people—their dreams, their beliefs, their stories. And so, we adapted. We worked. And what emerged is nothing short of magic.

This pair of wooden carved pillars, framing a beautiful arched entryway, has now become the soul of the home. It instantly transports you to the verandahs of old Chettinad homes —where time slows down, where you sip coffee and read the morning newspaper, where nostalgia lingers in the air.

What started as a small adjustment turned into the defining moment of this space. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.

MARAKHADAM - Guest bedroom

The guest bedroom is wrapped in earthy tones and natural textures. The muted ivory wardrobes are accented with woven cane and wooden handles, adding warmth and character. The green lime-plastered walls bring a fresh vibrancy, beautifully complemented by a tropical wallpaper. Thoughtful details like brass sconces, a cane-framed mirror, and handcrafted textiles complete the look. A cozy, timeless space that feels just right!

MARAKADHAM- Master bathroom

The master bedroom follows a warm yellow theme, and for the master bath, we wanted a palette that felt cohesive yet timeless. The muted tone of Jaisalmer stone pairs beautifully with the classic white flooring featuring black diamond inlays, adding a touch of vintage charm. ✨ The niche provides a functional yet seamless storage solution, keeping essentials within reach while maintaining a clean, minimal aesthetic. Simple, elegant, and just what the client loves!

Parents bedroom - MARAKADHAM

The parent's bedroom features a rich palette of rust, green, and grey, bringing together earthy tones for a grounded, natural feel. A brick wall backdrop behind the bed adds a rustic touch, while Nilaya’s wallpaper from the "Magnificent South" series sandwiched in the wardrobe door beautifully complements the space. Vintage glass lights, grey lime plaster half walls, rust coloured banana fibre blinds and a black-and-white family photo montage wall complete the room’s aesthetic.

Dining View

The exposed brick accents on the wall and framed artwork enhance the rustic charm of the space, while brass vessels on the shelf bring an authentic vintage touch. The dining area is further enhanced by the traditional seating platform 'Thinnai' and the chettinad style pillar.
