Nagapattinam Collector’s camp office renovation

In 2023, we were called to Nagapattinam, to look at the camp office and do minimal renovation to make the large but compressed spaces more liveable. We were in awe with the port authority building, more than 100 yrs old, metamorphed into district collector’s residence and emergency camp office. (Think Tsunami and Covid 19). Working with PWD, we felt would be tricky. But the Assistant Engineer and team turned out to be warm and enthusiastic about the proposal. In 2024, with the tenure change, we found ourselves back at the premises, with a more ambitious and sensitive collector, wanting to entirely conserve and renovate this heritage building into a administrative officer’s residence and office closest to the original architectural character. The presentation shows the scale, material, detail and the zeal with which we have been working on this project since August 2024.

Illuri Farms.

Illuri farms, is a green haven tucked away in the middle of bustling Brookfield, Bangalore. Large trees, farm animals, a Yoga studio, cafe and home stay units are already the existing elements of the land. We were called to design a commercial rental space, confirming to the trees in the site. The exercise was to work with and around the trees and create a ground level, third space for the city and a first level studio space. We looked at diagrams to iterate the foot print possibilities. One of them crescents around the trees creating a poche in the inside space. Another capsules the trees, creating smaller courts along the length of the building. CSEB interlocking brick masonry, concrete structural frames, steel stairs, reclaimed wooden louvre doors were seen as the material palette, for their efficiency and warm earthy aesthetics.

V2 house, Katteri.

V and V are mother-daughter duo who with us, imagined a workation home, at Katteri, close to Connor, Tamil Nadu. Their property is right at the hairpin bend with a view to the Katteri falls. The top road level is 60 ft higher than the house patio level, somewhere at the mid altitude of their plot. Negotiating tall revetments, and establishing a commercial/parking level, Mother’s house level and daughter’s house level, leading into the tea plantation below, was the design challenge. Its a project where we learnt to be humble with the force of nature. The scheme looked at options, that allowed for phase wise ex*****on, concurrent with levels. It also looked at imitating the steep hill and opening upto the smell, sound and feel of the cold air, water, and vegetation all around.
