CALM COFFEE, Jayanagar by Studio Dashline

The project began not with a material, a form, or an image, but with a feeling.

The brief was simple: to create Calm.

Not as silence. Not as softness. Not as an aesthetic. But as a state of being within the city.

Amid the constant movement of Jayanagar, the space was imagined as a pause, carved from a single dark mass. Walls, counters, ceilings and seating become fragments of one monolithic form, shaped through subtraction.

Burnt umber, deep terracotta and muted mineral surfaces absorb light and hold shadow. The counter anchors the room with weight. Seating emerges from walls. Objects rest quietly within recessed shelves. Daylight enters slowly, revealing the space only in parts.

Every decision returned to one question:

How can architecture make you slow down?

Because Calm is not the absence of movement.

It is the moment when body, light, material and time begin to move at the same pace.

In the constant movement of Jayanagar, the space was imagined as a pause carved from a single dark mass. Walls, counters, ceilings and seating were treated as fragments of one monolithic form, shaped through subtraction rather than addition.

Burnt umber, oxidised brown, deep terracotta and muted mineral surfaces absorb light and hold shadow. The counter anchors the room with weight, while concealed light traces edges gently. Seating emerges from the walls. Objects sit quietly within recessed shelves. Daylight enters slowly, never flooding the room, only revealing it in parts.

Every decision returned to the same question.

CALM COFFEE, Jayanagar by Studio Dashline

The right side of Calm unfolds as a layered composition of mass, objects and occupation.

The coffee counter anchors the foreground, while the central display shelf draws the eye deeper into the room with records, books, ceramics and collected objects. Along the terracotta clad wall, a continuous bench is paired with compact tables and slender metal chairs, creating small pockets for reading, conversation and pause.

Burnt clay, oxidised metal, leather, timber and brushed steel sit within a closely held palette, yet each surface responds differently to daylight. The result is an interior that reveals itself gradually, through foreground, middle ground and depth.

CALM COFFEE, Jayanagar by Studio Dashline

A quiet tension between making and lingering.

The coffee station occupies the foreground as a weighty, folded form, while the banquette recedes along the opposite side of the room, creating a clear exchange between activity and repose. Above, broad horizontal planes compress the volume and heighten the sense of intimacy.

Rust toned metal, dark clay tiles, leather and muted stone sit within a narrow tonal register, giving the room a grounded, almost elemental presence.

Nothing feels placed independently. Each surface seems to belong to the next, as though the café has been shaped from one continuous material thought.

CALM COFFEE, Jayanagar by Studio Dashline

A fleeting figure crosses the frame, making the architecture feel momentarily inhabited rather than observed.

Behind the bar, the room holds its composure. Earthen surfaces, deep tonal shifts and the long horizontal counter form a grounded backdrop, while the blurred movement introduces a sense of everyday life into an otherwise measured composition.

The image captures Calm in transition, somewhere between preparation and pause, where the human presence becomes part of the spatial character rather than separate from it.

CALM COFFEE, Jayanagar by Studio Dashline

The bar at Calm is where architecture meets ritual.

Wrapped in oxidized brown surfaces, the counter rises into a continuous overhead volume, enclosing the barista within a focused workspace. Espresso machine, grinder, cups and tools sit inside this composition with almost no visual interruption, allowing preparation itself to become part of the scene.

A solitary timber stool softens the severity of the geometry, while the barista introduces movement into an otherwise composed frame.

Coffee is made here with the same precision with which the room is built.

CALM COFFEE, Jayanagar by Studio Dashline

At the far end of Calm, the display wall becomes a quiet cabinet of curiosities.

Records, ceramics, books and everyday objects sit within a precise grid, each compartment carrying its own small pool of warmth. Against the darker room, the collection reads almost like a series of still lifes, bringing personality into an otherwise restrained interior.

The high seating counter table in front softens the formality of the composition, turning display into backdrop and making the room feel inhabited rather than staged.

A corner where music, objects and coffee quietly meet.

CALM COFFEE, Jayanagar by Studio Dashline

Here, the interior feels almost nocturnal.

A thin ribbon of illumination cuts across the ceiling and continues above the coffee station, tracing the angular profile of the room. The remaining surfaces recede into deep brown tones, allowing only selected objects, the grinder, vessels and the edge of the seating, to emerge from the darkness.

What is visible becomes as important as what is withheld.

The result is an interior defined by suggestion rather than exposure, where the eye adjusts slowly and the atmosphere gathers around the ritual of coffee.
