India has some of the world's most competitive advantages in products like Carpet, Textiles, Leather, Handicraft and many labour-intensive industries.
We have quality manufacturing, skilled workers, and competitive production costs.
But there is a major gap that often gets ignored.
How can a buyer place a large order if they cannot affordably receive a sample first?
For many products, the cost of shipping a sample from India to the USA or Europe or Middle East can be several times higher than the value of the sample itself.
As a result, many small and medium-sized buyers—restaurant owners, boutique retailers, gift shops, local brands, and independent store owners—struggle to source directly from India.
Large importers ordering full containers can negotiate better freight rates and enjoy economies of scale. They benefit from India's manufacturing strengths and build highly profitable supply chains.
But smaller buyers rarely get the same advantage.
Many of them ultimately turn to China, not necessarily because the product is better, but because the overall sourcing process—including samples and small shipments—is often easier and more affordable.
India talks a lot about increasing exports, but perhaps we should also focus on making it easier for international buyers to take the first step.
Because every container shipment starts with a sample.
And every long-term buyer relationship starts with trust.
