சுழல் // Vortex.
What is it that keeps stopping my progressive thoughts at bay? What is it that keeps me grounded all the time? Is it a humbling, or an isolating force? Do I fear it, or become part of it?

Colours of Chettinad.
(SWIPE FOR DETAILS AND THE MOCKUP ⏩)
This is my entry for the Art Contest by X and I was super excited to put my idea forward for this. I have always fantasized myself wearing the Kandangi saree, going to the temples, spending my time there like royalty in the Chettinad houses (the image inspiration for this was from book "Mogappu") sitting with the tile artisans and making Athangudi tiles.

This artwork is a culmination of the colours that you would see in the Chettinad region. It is indeed, a visual feast to your eyes! And as an artist and graphic designer, I'm super thrilled to have put forward this artwork for the contest!
Mockup #1 from Freepik.

Kanneer Anjali posters are a common format of documenting a person's death, at the social level. These posters express deep bereavement, and have the graphics of two eyes in tears, with words like "கண்ணீர் அஞ்சலி" , or "மிகவும் வருந்துகிறோம்"

I believe the heritage buildings of Madras that is Chennai, are like the elderly members of a family. Their journey with time, is a conversation between them, that we may never be able to understand. Their timelessness however, narrates countless stories for us to cherish and learn from. Some of these stories are personal, when experienced.

But is heritage limited to only the heritage from the past of our generation? What about the buildings that were built at the time of our parents, which would serve as heritage for the future generation?

In this sense was my emotion behind this poster, as I represented the Jammi buildings which are under the hammer.

"The (Un)Inherited Heritage of Chennai"

The essence of Chennai is one that truly lies in its past. The golden thread that connects Chennai to its people, is its past, which is symbolized by its rich culture and heritage. But that golden thread breaks somewhere in between, cutting the generational story short. This golden thread is challenged by time, and most of all, a certain lack of knowledge. This lack of understanding prevents the coming generations from keeping the golden heritage thread intact and hence remains broken. This artwork is made keeping three generations as a reference – The generation of my age, the generation before, and the generation much before.

The heritage I never experienced, was experienced by the two previous generations and so on. But the heritage that the three generations never experienced remains in inherited memories.

What of the future generation? What
part of heritage will they experience?

------------------------------------------

"The (Un)Inherited Heritage of Chennai" accompanied by two "Kanneer Anjali" posters (Sketched using Pigment liners and watercolour) for heritage buildings that were razed down recently. Through this artwork, I aim to ask the viewers "What is heritage? Is it only so because it has stood for various years, or sparked a generational shift that is continuing?" I believe heritage is a golden thread that connects the people to the city's past, and the thread is denoted by faint, broken golden lines in the artwork.

------------------------------------------

Time: 3 weeks (Sketching + Researching on the buildings)
Media: Faber Castell Pigment liners, Doms Watercolor, and Posca Metallic Gold marker.

It's been ages since I touched watercolor, to say so in the least. And I wasn't completely confident in my basics on the same. But I have my husband who says otherwise and tells me that "Art is what we make of"

Keeping these wise words in mind, I decided to paint my sketch on the Connemara library from 2018, that fell on my hands as I was going through some of my old artworks. What a timing!

The Madras "Sea"nery.
Quite simple and straightforward with this art for the upcoming day celebrations. I put together all of the places that came to my mind within the first few minutes and stitched up this illustration using

But here's the minor element, as much as Madras is known for its being a coastal city, its diminishing water bodies are of prime concern. This was represented by the dotted lines. A continuous line would represent a good amount of water bodies, while dotted lines would represent fewer amounts.

And honestly, I was quite inspired by the people around me doing amazing work on the city of Madras that is Chennai! Tagging them here! Appreciate what you do!

I would like your comments on this style which was a complete first try 😊

Hello all,

Wayanad is going through an extremely difficult time and I know I'm not doing justice to describe it. In light of what is happening in Wayanad, I'm holding a fundraiser, a small effort from my end.

I humbly request you to not mistake me in any regard as I have absolutely no personal interest to benefit from this, except to do my best to help people contribute to the cause.

I have shared the details as to how you can participate, and the account details of the Chief Minister's Disaster Relief Fund, if you do not wish to participate in the Fundraiser.

Either way, my goal is to do my best to help people contribute to the cause, either way possible. Thank you for understanding 🙏

[Orders will be fulfilled through Vistaprint for those who wish to order the artwork(s)]
