The material changed. The design intent didn’t.

Originally imagined in carved stone, this detail was reinterpreted in HDHMR — with carved motifs, hand-applied texture and a stone-like finish.

MADRAS DAY | WHAT A CITY TO DESIGN IN

To practise interior design in Chennai today is to stand at a rather extraordinary intersection.

We inherit Vastu Shastra, Athangudi floors, Madras terraces, carved timber, cane, stone, lime and the knowledge of generations of craftspeople.

But Chennai has never remained only a custodian of the old.

From plywood and engineered boards to sanitaryware, tiles and dry-construction systems — and now sustainable materials such as Indowud, developed from agricultural residue — this city and its industrial hinterland have also contributed to the materials with which contemporary India builds.

And today we add another layer: automation, intelligent lighting, acoustics, climate control and smart homes.

Perhaps that is what makes being a Chennai designer so special.

We can draw from the sthapathi and the technologist.
From the artisan’s hand and the automated home.
From an Athangudi tile to a zero-wood board.

Madras taught us craft.
Chennai continues to teach us innovation.

And we get to design with both.
