Walls often serve as simple canvases and we manipulated the varying heights of the facade which immediately allowed us to envision the design on a grander scale.

We modified the frontage, introduced projections and recesses to create opportunities for overlaying diverse materials and textures right from the design phase.

The site for this standalone building is located in a semi-urban area of Chennai. It sits on a relatively plain, featureless plot with no significant topographical variations or vegetation. Given the lack of specific site context, the design had to be adaptable and versatile, suitable for this neutral setting. To achieve this, we developed a layered composite cladding system for the facade.
We introduced several experimental elements:

Stone Composite Slabs: Typically used for kitchen countertops, we utilised 15mm thick antique grey stone composite slabs as cladding for the facade. This unconventional choice offers both a classical aesthetic and high-performance qualities such as strength, flexibility, durability, and a lightweight profile, making it ideal for external use.

WPC Louvers: To create depth and dimension, we layered WPC - Wood Polymer Composite louvers over the stone slabs. These engineered planks from are sustainable and well-suited for exterior applications, with moisture-proof, UV-resistant, anti-static, and all-weather durability. The wood-like texture adds a natural touch to the facade.

Green Wall Cladding: For the living wall, we collaborated with .india and carefully analysed the site orientation and annual sun path, selecting a plant palette optimised for the environmental conditions. The greenery introduces a vibrant element to the otherwise neutral facade.

Signage: The brand’s visibility is emphasised with a custom stainless steel and liquid acrylic signage system. The backlit stainless steel letters have a 2-inch depth, with RF painting supported by an MS square frame. The liquid acrylic logo features 3M vinyl, UV printing, and matte lamination, offering a sleek, modern finish.

Customised lighting design unifies the facade, creating a dramatic, nighttime persona.

Each material—stone, wood, and greenery—is highlighted with precision, using layered lighting to enhance their natural beauty.

We selected 15-watt surface COB down lights from , emitting a warm yellow glow. These lights are strategically spaced to illuminate the stone cladding from top to bottom, gently highlighting the texture and casting rhythmic patterns of light and shadow across the WPC louvers. The effect creates a dynamic interplay that underlines the architectural elements.

The green wall takes on a soft, ethereal glow, subtly lit by indirect lighting from the COBs, while the plants are artfully highlighted along their contours.

To enhance the entrance, we used Neon Flex Top Bend profile lights, specifically chosen for their UV resistance and waterproof durability. These dotless LED strips, at 12 watts per meter, span lengths of 10 meters, seamlessly connected with double-end jointers to bring a sleek, continuous line of light to the stair edges.

For all the exterior lighting, we opted for a warm 3000k colour temperature, creating a refined, understated elegance that welcomes visitors with a gentle, inviting glow.

Spatially, we zoned the front-end office with easy access and visibility from the main road. The back-end production wing is segmented into a private access zone by a 82 foot long partition with a hidden access door. The main glass door entrance directly opens to the lobby which is flanked by public access spaces on both sides. Manager’s cabin and the meeting room are adjacent to the reception for ease of access. A linear pathway is carved out to connect these spaces with toilets and pantries enhancing the fluidity of spaces.

Production area is further pocketed into glass cubicles that need cross - monitoring and collaborations across each phase of the production process. The process involves raw material collection and storage, inspection, laser marking, utra-sonic cleaning, warehouse, sterilisation and clean rooms, lined up adjacent to each other as per the production flow. Multiple doors and passageways between these spaces ensure a linear material movement and communication.

Make In India rooms, Clean rooms and godowns with a receiving bay for loading and unloading of materials are wrapped in the edges with restricted access to the public.

To Everyone who has joined us, we wanted to pop in and say hi!
This is Aishwarya and Braghadeesh here.

Millimeter Affair Inc. was conceived towards the end of 2022, as a design-build studio, with an aspiration to bring together experimental design that puts comfort and spatial awareness at the forefront with impeccable ex*****on. We created a space where we can study, understand and employ different materials, textures, details and bring them together through homes, offices, restaurants and more.

From colleagues to friends, life partners, and now business partners, it’s been one great adventure. With a decade long, rich experience of project management ranging from large scale commercial projects and handling city operations for corporates, Braghadeesh is the technical know-how of everything we design and I channel the design inspiration, creating the bold ideas that shape our projects.

Braghadeesh and I are different people but our love to transform spaces, brought us together and has made us take this leap of faith.

Looking forward to sharing meaningful work and our process behind it, as we find our way to create spaces that speak to our audiences.

Cheers,
Aishwarya and Braghadeesh

As an ode to the tranquil nature of the client’s medical device and instrument manufacturing business, we envisioned a monochromatic palette with layers of white and abundant natural light flooding the front office space.

We have embraced materials such as fluted white PU panels, white and gray stone veneers on feature walls and white solid acrylic bent to form geometric shapes for the front desk alongside clear glass partitions to enhance openness and light distribution.

Pigmented liquid acrylic signages are backlit and placed on the fluted panel. The flooring features cloud concrete tiles flowing through the space. The timeless appeal of white is married with textured grays and striking wooden features.

We were looking at several options of wall cladding for this feature wall. Something that would be bold in its texture and tone, but merge with the underlying monotone palette. Variety of marble, stones and laminates were considered. But, we zeroed in on using stone veneer sheets on top of this gypsum-plywood partition built adjacent to the restroom wall.

A really unique white and grey mix of a pebble-like rustic patterned veneer was used of size 8’x4’ as SV31 Cosmos. These high density 2mm thick sheets are durable, waterproof, fire-resistant, anti-fungus, anti-termite and eco-friendly.

We have done reception tables with a wide range of materials prior to this one. But, the desire to use solid acrylic bent to form a geometric table, arose from our fond experiences with built-in solid acrylic wash basins previously.

Here, you can see a conical geometry protruding from a base plywood construction and solid acrylic sheets are mounted on it. Buffing the edges and corners have rendered the seamless, eloquent finish that we desired for.

We aimed at creating a subtle reception backdrop only to showcase Client’s accolades with backlighting.

The Manager's cabin features bold blue accents on the storage cabinets, standing out against a predominantly monochromatic palette. Despite the compact layout, a full-height storage unit has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate file archives, CCTV DVRs, and various stationery essentials. Adding texture to the space, the backdrop showcases a CNC-cut MDF wall panel finished with a sleek duco paint. The custom-made manager's desk combines functionality and style, crafted with sturdy solid wood legs and a laminated tabletop that includes recessed drawers for seamless organization.

The conference room carries the blue accent upward to the ceiling, where a CNC-cut MDF panel with a matte duco finish adds a touch of sophistication. Designed for small team meetings, this compact space comfortably accommodates 4 to 6 people, primarily serving the front office team. The custom-designed table features rounded edges and a durable laminated tabletop, supported by a curved MS frame. This design ensures both aesthetic appeal and a low-maintenance practicality to the team.
