The most challenging yet rewarding space was the open living–dining–kitchen layout. The original plan had an odd L-shape, but through careful spatial planning and a continuous timber wall that stretches across the living room, we turned it into a cohesive, flowing family zone. Integrating the media shelving unit, visible from the kitchen, and the built-in storage beside the sofa made it both functional and visually seamless.

Designed for a dynamic 75 year-old CEO, the residence is equal parts personal retreat and occasional hub for family gatherings and work-related meetings. Transit Home is a 2,500 sq.ft. private residence in Egmore, Chennai, carved out of a vintage office building. The vision was to respect the age and character of the architecture, ensuring that the interiors felt like a natural extension of the home’s history rather than a starkly modern contrast. The result is a layered, time-capsule-like residence where vintage warmth, mid-century modern pieces, Bauhaus influences, and Indian craft traditions come together seamlessly.

The transformation from office to home presented both challenges and opportunities. Restrictions on structural changes meant the design evolved into distinct, characterful pockets: a foyer created from a former cubicle, a living and dining zone carved out of larger chambers, and new bathrooms integrated with care to preserve the building’s integrity. These constraints became advantages, giving the residence a unique, organic flow — from the staircase leading into the master suite, to a subtle nagada step up into the walk-in closet, to a playful internal window that connects the library, media room, and foyer in layered sightlines.

The home’s signature feature is the continuous mosaic flooring, tying every space together with a sense of rhythm and continuity. Rich wood tones, handmade rugs, and surfaces in local travertine, marble, and granite bring depth and tactility. In contrast, stainless steel accents across furniture, lighting, and decor infuse a Bauhaus-inspired sharpness.

The formal space is anchored by a grand open-concept living, dining, and bar area. To achieve the bold, opulent atmosphere desired by the client, we enveloped the entire great room in a deep charcoal grey, covering both walls and ceiling to create a dramatic, intimate setting perfect for entertaining.

Given the homeowners’ passion for entertaining and hosting friends, the formal living and bar area has become their favorite gathering spot. This elegant space is designed for lively conversations and memorable celebrations, making it the perfect backdrop for their social gatherings.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this home is that we were able craft two distinct moods for the formal and informal side while maintaining a cohesive design style throughout. This seamless integration allows for a dynamic living experience where each space exudes its unique character. The opulent, moody atmosphere of the entertainment area contrasts beautifully with the warm vibe of the family side, yet both sides resonate with the same elegant aesthetic. This m not only enhances the functionality of the home but also creates an inviting harmony, making it a perfect sanctuary for both lively gatherings and intimate family moments.

Given that the clients spend a significant amount of time working from home, they needed a functional yet inspiring home office. To create a calm and focused atmosphere, we chose a deep olive green that envelops both the walls and ceiling. A long desk was strategically placed in front of the window, offering a serene view of the lush green surroundings—a perfect setup for productive workdays.

For added functionality, we included ample storage for books and office supplies, seamlessly integrated near the cozy couch. This nook doubles as a perfect reading space, blending practicality with comfort and making the home office a versatile and inviting retreat.

For the entertainment side, We opted for a deep, dark charcoal shade for the walls and ceiling, instantly enveloping the space in a moody ambience. This dramatic backdrop enhances the luxurious feel, while ample seating arrangements for the living, dining, and bar areas create an inviting space for gatherings.
