Before it became a lamp, it was made for a very different life.
Martaban jars were large glazed vessels traded through the port of Martaban—present-day Mottama in Myanmar. Made across different parts of Southeast Asia, they travelled aboard trading ships carrying oil, grain, spices and preserved foods across the Indian Ocean.
Many eventually reached the western coast of India, where they continued to be used, stored and passed down over time.
This weathered jar has now begun another chapter. Its glaze, marks and imperfections remain untouched, but it has been reimagined as a lamp—bringing the warmth of its long journey into a contemporary home.
Once a vessel for voyages. Now, a vessel for light.
