A table runner does not have to behave like a straight line.
Centre it when the table wants a little ceremony. Shift it slightly when dinner is more everyday than occasion. On a smaller table, let a Gulab placemat do the work of a runner - one soft layer is often enough.
The only rule we keep: leave some table showing. A beautiful textile should frame the room, not swallow it.
