A statue of the Buddha in the glittering Bhaskerdev Samskarita Hiranyabarna Mahavihara, or the ‘Golden Temple’ in Patan, in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal.

Patan, or Lalitpur, is located to the south of Kathmandu city centre. It has been a centre for arts and crafts for centuries and glitters with golden doorways, statues and temples.

At its heart, Bhaskerdev Samskarita Hiranyabarna Mahavihara, or the ‘Golden Temple’ is a breathtaking site to experience through all the senses. Patan is one of the most spectacular medieval cities in the Himalayas…

Happy Losar! To celebrate Tibetan New Year, Jordan Quill is proud to reveal a brand new range of specially commissioned thangka!

This thangka comes from this special group now available on my website, it depicts Manjusri (རྗེ་བཙུན་འཇམ་དཔལ་དབྱངས་), a Bodhisattva who in Nepal is regarded as the founder of Nepalese culture. Manjusri is associated with wisdom; in his right hand he holds a flaming sword that destroys all ignorance.

Hand drawn and painted with minute detail, this exceptional thangka was commissioned exclusively for Jordan Quill. Its colour palette is derived from careful observation of antique and historical thangka seen in monasteries and museums in India, Nepal and beyond.

24 carat gold has been applied in fine detail, which can only be fully appreciated when seeing the painting in person. The use of genuine gold is unique in its ability to brightly reflect light, elevating the painting and giving it additional material value beyond its artistic characteristics, making it worth the investment. Thangkas of this quality, traditional colour palette, use of real gold, and in this smaller size are not available generally to tourists and are offered here as the result of many years of collaboration and friendship with a specific family of painters.

This painting took between 4-6 weeks to paint, and was made slowly in a family-owned workshop, made with love in the high-altitude tranquil mists of Himachal Pradesh.
