Sagar Manthan, also known as the Churning of the Ocean, is a legendary event in Hindu mythology. Here's a brief :

The Story
The story begins with the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) fighting for supremacy. The gods, led by Indra, were weakened due to a curse, while the demons, led by Bali, gained strength.

To regain their strength, the gods sought the help of Lord Vishnu. He advised them to churn the ocean of milk (Kshir Sagar) to obtain the nectar of immortality, Amrita.

The Churning
The gods and demons agreed to work together to churn the ocean. They used the mountain Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope.

As they churned, various objects emerged from the ocean, including:

- Kamadhenu, the wish-granting cow
- Uchchaihshravas, the divine horse
- Airavata, the white elephant
- Panchajanya, the conch shell
- Kalpavriksha, the wish-granting tree
- Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and beauty

The Poison
However, during the churning, a deadly poison called Halahala emerged from the ocean. This poison threatened to destroy the universe.

To save the universe, Lord Shiva came forward and drank the poison. His consort, Goddess Parvati, grabbed his throat to prevent the poison from spreading to the rest of his body.

The Aftermath
The poison turned Shiva's throat blue, earning him the name Neelakantha (the blue-throated one). The gods and demons continued to churn the ocean, eventually obtaining the Amrita.

The gods, now strengthened by the Amrita, defeated the demons and regained their supremacy.

Significance
Sagar Manthan symbolizes the struggle between good and evil, as well as the importance of cooperation and sacrifice. Lord Shiva's act of drinking the poison demonstrates his selfless nature and his willingness to protect the universe.

This legend has been depicted in various forms of art and literature throughout Hindu history, and continues to be celebrated and revered today.
