Interior design should be practical from the very beginning. That includes specifying products that are available within the project schedule.

A product may be the perfect fit for the design, the budget and the performance requirements.

But if it is unavailable, has a long lead time or requires importing, it can quickly become one of the biggest reasons for project delays.

When this happens, project teams are often forced to make difficult decisions.

Should the project wait for the specified product?

Or should an alternative be selected after the design has already been approved?

Both options have consequences.

Waiting can delay the project schedule.

Changing specifications midway can affect the design intent, cost, performance and coordination with other materials.

This is why product availability should be considered during the design stage, not just during procurement.

Before specifying any product, it is important to ask:

• Is it available within the project timeline?

• What is the manufacturing or delivery lead time?

• Is there a suitable alternative if supply becomes an issue?

The best product specification is not only one that looks good on paper.

It is one that can be procured, delivered and installed without disrupting the project.

Because successful commercial interiors are built on decisions that balance design, performance and practicality.

Not every commercial space needs a permanent interior.

Some businesses may relocate within a few years. Others may expand, reduce their footprint, or move to a different building.

In such cases, investing heavily in fixed interior elements can result in significant costs when the business moves.

This is where modular design can make more sense.
For example:

• Modular workstations can be dismantled and reinstalled at a new location.

• Demountable partitions can be relocated or reconfigured as requirements change.

• Modular storage systems can move with the business instead of being replaced.

• Carpet tiles can be removed, replaced or reused more easily than fully fixed flooring solutions.

• Freestanding furniture and other movable elements can be incorporated into the next workspace.

The objective is not to make every commercial interior temporary.

It is to understand the business plans before deciding what should be fixed and what should remain adaptable.

If a business expects to stay in the same space for many years, permanent solutions may make sense.

If relocation or frequent changes are likely, modular solutions can protect more of the investment.

Good interior design considers not only how a space works today, but also what may happen to the business tomorrow.

Natural light should influence how an office interior is planned.
In office design, natural light is often treated simply as a visual feature.

But it can play an important role in deciding where different functions should be placed within the workspace.
For example:

• Workstations and regularly occupied areas can be positioned where they receive better access to daylight.

• Meeting rooms and collaboration spaces can also benefit from natural light where possible.

• Breakout areas and employee lounges can be placed near windows to create more comfortable spaces.

• Storage rooms, utility areas, server rooms and other spaces that do not require natural light can be positioned further away from windows.

This allows the available daylight to be used where it provides the most value, rather than using valuable window-facing areas for functions that do not need it.

Natural light should also be considered when planning partitions, furniture placement and artificial lighting.

The objective is not to give every part of an office access to natural light.

It is to allocate it intelligently based on how each space is used.
Good office interior design is not just about creating an attractive layout.

It is about understanding how each part of the workspace needs to function and planning accordingly.

Sometimes, better space planning simply means making better use of what is already available.

We designed the interiors for VIPRA Super Store in Al Quoz, Dubai, a destination that brings together digital, signage, lighting, interior and building products under one roof.

With a diverse product portfolio, the design challenge was to create a retail environment that helps customers navigate effortlessly while giving every product category its own identity.

Our approach focused on organised zoning, efficient circulation and a layout that encourages exploration without overwhelming the customer.

Designed with an industrial aesthetic, the 10,000 sq. ft. superstore combines exposed ceilings, cement textures, rustic terrazzo flooring and steel detailing to create a contemporary backdrop that complements the products on display. Every design decision was made to improve product presentation, enhance the customer journey and support the operational needs of the business.

More than a retail space, the showroom was designed as an experience where customers can discover, compare and interact with a wide range of solutions in one destination.

We are proud to have completed this project in association with the IHG Creative Team.
