The next best thing after Ruskin Bond in Mussoorie? This charming hilltop home, of course! Ensconced in the misty hills along a narrow-winding road is a stately 7,000 sq ft home. The double-storey space, restored to its former splendour by Aditi Sharma Design Studio , was built in the early 1900s.

Beyond its structural makeovers, the home carries the charm of a foregone era, with each space rooted in nostalgia. An ode to the glorious homes that once dotted the hills, the principal designer sought to pen the den’s story in stone and wood. While its thick lime-plastered walls, timber beams speak of time-worn elegance, the home had slipped into a state of disrepair. The current custodians of the space, drawn to the interiors of bygone era, desired to preserve the home’s soul while infusing it with the comforts of modern living.

The next best thing after Ruskin Bond in Mussoorie? This charming hilltop home, of course! Ensconced in the misty hills along a narrow-winding road is a stately 7,000 sq ft home. The double-storey space, restored to its former splendour by Aditi Sharma Design Studio , was built in the early 1900s.

There’s something about homes built on hilltops that immediately remind you of fairytales. So when Aditi Sharma () of her Delhi-based eponymous design studio was asked to refurbish a holiday home in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, she knew it would be an experience like no other. “The clients live in metropolitan cities; they wanted a holiday home in Mussoorie to be designed keeping in mind the British Raj era, because they wanted a pleasant change from the whole modern, minimalistic neutral interiors that one sees nowadays,” Sharma says.

It’s a holiday home for the owners to put their feet up in a hideout away from the dust and grime of the national capital, and the home allows just that. Spread over 5,000 square feet of area and two floors, the home welcomes you with a sprawling garden with the most spectacular mountain view. The garden has a walking path all around the property, an outdoor bar and a barbecue station. And for when the evenings begin to get a little too chilly, there is a separate enclosure with a semi-circular stone sit-out area around a fireplace.

There are vintage chandeliers, a dining table with shabby-chic vintage chairs with rattan panelling, while the walls are dotted with a collection of plates on one side and woollen durries on the other.

Unsurprisingly, the living area has stone walls with a cozy fireplace carved into it. “The chequered prints gracefully bring out the nostalgic English charm of this space that is perfect for hosting high-tea, get-togethers and more. All the doors open up to the outdoor garden area,” Sharma adds.
