Obvara firing is one of the most unpredictable techniques in ceramics

The piece is pulled red-hot from the kiln and plunged straight into a fermented flour batter, then cooled in water. The heat and starch react instantly, searing organic, smoky patterns into the surface. No glaze. No two results ever the same.
Watch one of our students bring this ancient Slavic technique to life at Zeventien. 🏺

From a lump of clay to a finished form ✨

Every piece begins with a simple cylinder on the wheel. The form is thrown, carefully trimmed, and refined before the handle is shaped and attached by hand. After the final touches, the vase is left to dry, ready for its first firing, the bisque firing that transforms fragile clay into durable ceramic.

A slow process, guided by patience, precision, and the joy of making. 🤎

I’ve been experimenting with foil saggar firing in my Raku kiln ✨🔥

Traditionally, saggar firing is done using saggar pots filled with carbonates, salts, and organic materials that fume during firing to create beautiful surface colors and patterns from the fire itself.

I had previously tried this process through pit firing and got some beautiful results, so this time I wanted to recreate that same magic inside my Raku kiln. The unpredictability is what makes it so exciting, every firing leaves behind completely unique marks, smoke patterns, and colors shaped by heat, chemistry, and chance 🤍
