1. What makes a space feel contemporary today but timeless 10-15 years from now?
I invest in pieces that aren’t trend-driven and juxtapose them with classics that have already stood the test of time.

2. Which elements should be timeless, and which can follow trends?
Keep the architecture and larger furniture timeless. Have fun with armchairs, coffee tables, lighting and accessories, they’re easier to evolve.

3. How do you stop a neutral interior from feeling flat?
By layering texture, sheen, materials and pattern. Texture creates depth in a way colour alone never can.

4. What makes this room feel luxurious without shouting luxury?
The materials, craftsmanship and attention to detail. Luxury isn’t louder, it’s better executed.

5. Where do you spend the budget, and where do you save?
I’d rather invest in art, rugs, lighting and accessories than another slab of marble. The backdrop matters, but the finishing layers create the emotion.

6. What role does lighting play?
Lighting is more important than furniture. Furniture fills a room. Lighting gives it atmosphere.

7. How do you future-proof an interior?
I design 10–12 years ahead and only choose pieces I believe will still feel relevant a decade from now.

8. What’s the difference between a room that’s Instagram-worthy and one that’s wonderful to live in?
One’s designed for the Gram. The other’s designed for the fam.

9. What makes someone walk in and instantly think, “This just feels right”?
The proportions, sightlines, balance, lighting and textures. People may not notice them but they always feel them. And that’s exactly what I do - make designs thoughtful.

You don’t start with furniture.

You start by questioning everything.

This home was over four decades old, and our mandate was clear - bring it up to today’s standards while preserving the character that made it worth keeping.

Walls were broken and entrances relocated. The HVAC was completely redesigned. An awkward leftover space was transformed into an intimate four-seater lounge, proving that thoughtful planning can create luxury where none existed before.

The design language is classic contemporary. Clean. Layered. And built to last. Inspired by a client who had travelled the world, the home was designed to evoke the understated elegance of his favourite hotels, without ever feeling impersonal.

Art by celebrated Kolkata artist Arup Lodh anchors the space, honouring the client’s roots, while bespoke furniture, a handcrafted carpet, warm timber detailing and carefully sourced artefacts add depth and authenticity.

People often think luxury is about what you buy.

I believe it’s about what you solve.

People often ask if I have a signature style.

The answer is no. My signature isn’t a look.
It’s the ability to translate a vision.

This couple had lived across different countries before finally calling Dubai home. Their home needed to feel calm, fluid and timeless.

Instead of relying on colour, we relied on movement.

The sculptural wall installation, curved seating, geometric moulded panelling and carefully layered textures work together to create depth without visual noise.

Because minimal doesn’t mean less design.

It means every decision matters more.

Life cycle of a design.

If you’re ever in doubt about how mouldings transform a room… watch this.

Same furniture.
Same lighting.
Same colours.
Same layout.

It’s a detail many people overlook, but it’s one of the strongest architectural tools we have. Mouldings create rhythm, proportion and depth. They frame walls, add scale, soften large surfaces and make a room feel intentional rather than flat.

The difference is subtle when you look at a single wall. It’s impossible to ignore when you see the entire room.

One of my favourite families I’ve ever had the privilege of working with. Even after all these years, this project remains incredibly close to my heart.

This cigar room, in particular, has had quite a life of its own. Over the years, I can only imagine how many cricketers, industry leaders, and other newsmakers have spent evenings here. It’s wonderful to think that a space I designed has quietly witnessed so many conversations and memories.

The greatest reward, though, is hearing from clients after the project is complete. This is the message I received:

“I saw Shalini’s work. Her sensibilities and eye for detail caught my attention immediately. I decided to have a chat with her. Months later, after she had done up my new home, I must say it was the best decision.

Shalini was given the mandate to design my penthouse, which included a cigar room. After spending hours with her working through the furniture designs and the overall look and feel of the house, I was confident she would do a good job. However, I was a bit tense about the cigar room.

By the time the project was completed, I was totally amazed by her work.

More power to her.”

Feedback like this reminds me why I do what I do. Creating beautiful interiors is one thing - creating spaces that people continue to enjoy, celebrate, and make memories in years later is what makes this profession so fulfilling.
