Seema took a sip of her morning tea. “It’s too sweet,” she thought. Little things like this were enough to spoil her mood for the whole day. She touched the recent blemish on her face. For perfectionist Seema, every small imperfection was a source of frustration and anxiety.
“Breathe,” she told herself, standing on the balcony.
She yearned for a perfect life, a perfect job, a perfect neighborhood, a perfect family, and a perfect house. Most of all, she wanted to be perfect herself. But reality never matched her wishes. When she looked in the mirror, she saw only imperfections. Sometimes she wondered if her obsession with perfection was the real flaw.
She remembered a poem she had read recently by Aldous Huxley:
It’s dark because you are trying too hard.
Lightly child, lightly.
Learn to do everything lightly.
Yes, feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply.
Just lightly let things happen and lightly cope with them.
She closed her eyes and breathed out slowly. For years, she had believed that peace would come when everything around her was finally in order. But standing there, she understood something she had never allowed herself to accept. Perhaps peace did not begin when life became perfect. Perhaps it began when she stopped demanding that it should be.
The tea was still too sweet. The blemish was still there. Nothing had changed, yet something inside her had.
For the first time, Seema did not reach for a solution. She simply stood there, breathed, and let the morning be exactly as it was.
And for once, that was enough.
