Day 6 of Navratri — Maa Katyayani 🌺

A sword in one hand. A lotus in another. The courage to protect, with the grace to nurture.

On the sixth day of Navratri, we honour Maa Katyayani, the warrior form of Maa Durga. Seated upon a lion, she carries a sword and a lotus, while her other two hands offer protection and blessings. Her presence brings together strength, composure and compassion.

Her sword invites us to reflect on the courage it takes to stand for what is right. The lotus reminds us to preserve the goodness within us, even when our surroundings are difficult. Her raised palm offers reassurance: we can face what lies ahead with faith.

There is something deeply powerful about her calm expression. She reminds us that courage need not always be loud. Sometimes, it is an honest conversation we have been avoiding. Sometimes, it is standing beside someone who needs support. And sometimes, it is choosing to begin again after a difficult chapter.

As we bow before Maa Katyayani, may we seek the wisdom to recognise what is right and the resolve to act upon it. May our strength make others feel safe, and may our compassion remain present in the choices we make.

With every diya we light and every prayer we offer, may we welcome a little more courage into our lives.

Day 5 of Navratri — Maa Skandamata 🌸

In the arms of the Divine Mother, even a future warrior begins as a child.

On the fifth day of Navratri, we honour Maa Skandamata, the mother of Lord Skanda, also known as Kartikeya. Her name itself celebrates this sacred bond: Skanda’s mother.

Holding her son close, carrying lotus flowers and raising a hand in blessing, she presents a deeply tender form of Maa Durga. With a lion as her vehicle, her presence brings together maternal affection and the courage to protect.

Her form offers a beautiful reflection on the strength of those who nurture us. Behind every confident step we take, there is often someone who patiently helped us find our footing. Someone who comforted our fears, believed in our possibilities and gave us the courage to grow.

Maa Skandamata reminds us to honour that love—and to carry it forward through our own actions. Through patience with someone who is learning. Through kindness when another person feels uncertain. Through being present when someone needs us.

The divine smile from which creation began.

On the fourth day of Shardiya Navratri, we honour Maa Kushmanda, the fourth form of Maa Durga, revered as the creative energy of the universe.

According to tradition, when darkness surrounded all existence, Maa Kushmanda brought forth the Brahmanda—the universe—with her gentle smile. Her story holds a beautiful thought: even the smallest expression of light can become the beginning of something boundless.

She is believed to dwell within the Sun, radiating the energy that sustains creation. Depicted with eight arms, she is also known as Ashtabhuja Devi. Her form brings together the instruments of protection, the lotus, prayer beads and a vessel of nectar—a powerful image of strength held alongside grace.

For us, her story offers a moment to reflect on the light we bring into everyday life: the kindness we extend, the hope we hold onto and the courage with which we begin again.

The crescent on Maa’s forehead carries the story of her name.

“Chandra” means moon, and “Ghanta” means bell. Her name comes from the half-moon adorning her forehead, whose shape resembles a bell. In devotional tradition, the sound of this divine moon-bell is believed to ward off evil and protect her devotees.

Worshipped on the third day of Navratri, Maa Chandraghanta is the married form of Goddess Parvati. Her expression is peaceful, yet her weapons stand ready—a mother whose compassion is accompanied by the strength to defend those in her care.

There is something deeply reassuring about this form of Maa. She invites us to reflect on the courage it takes to protect our peace, speak up for someone we love, or face a difficult moment with a steady heart.

As we light our diyas and offer our prayers today, may we find that courage within ourselves. May Maa bless our homes with harmony, guide us through uncertainty, and help us meet life’s challenges with both kindness and resolve. 🪔
