On 5 June 2015, Zacs and Phils® commissioned the integrated audio system at Sharon Mar Thoma Church, Palarivattom. Over a decade and 11 years of continuous operation later, the system continues to perform flawlessly.

In house-of-worship acoustic design, high sound pressure level (SPL) is never the metric of success—Speech Transmission Index (STI) and speech intelligibility are.

The Acoustic Challenge & Solution
Houses of worship often feature highly reverberant spaces. Generic loudspeaker deployments exacerbate early reflections and muddy the critical vocal band (1 kHz – 4 kHz). While the church's initial setup lasted six years, it struggled with speech clarity.

Five years ago, Zacs and Phils® installed and commissioned the audio system at the most Iconic St. Thomas Mar Thoma Syrian Church, Pattoor, Trivandrum.

We designed the system for the space.
We commissioned it.
And we left them with the knowledge to make the system perform as it should.

A LEGACY OF FAITH. A HERITAGE OF 587 YEARS.

Traditionally dated to 1440, this ancient parish stands as a witness to centuries of faith, worship and transformation.

It is remembered as the cradle of the Mar Thoma Reformation—the home parish of Abraham Malpan, where a movement that would shape the history of the Mar Thoma Church took root.

It is also inseparably connected to the Maramon Convention, which grew from this tradition into one of the most significant Christian gatherings in Kerala.

Today, after 587 years, this historic parish enters another chapter.

A careful restoration is underway—not simply to preserve an old structure, but to honour a living heritage and prepare it for generations yet to come.

In a highly reverberant church, controlling where sound goes is everything.
A cardioid speaker primarily controls rearward radiation.

Beam steering and beam shaping go much further.

They allow the loudspeaker to electronically control and shape the acoustic beam, directing sound precisely toward the congregation while reducing unwanted energy reaching ceilings, walls and other reflective surfaces.

The difference is simple:

Cardioid:
Controls sound behind the speaker.

Beam Steering:
