For underpainting, Burnt Sienna gives a warm, reddish-brown base thatโs ideal for vibrant, earthy scenes and natural flesh tones. Burnt Umber is darker and slightly cooler, making it better for deeper shadows and a more subdued moodโthough it can feel a bit heavier in oil content. In general, choose Burnt Sienna for warmth and luminosity, and Burnt Umber for depth and contrast. You can also mix either with blue to create rich, versatile dark neutrals.
Umber Underpainting
An umber underpainting uses burnt or raw umber to establish values and shadows before adding color. These earth pigments create a warm, natural base, making them ideal for landscapes, classical realism, and tonal studies.
Umbers contain iron oxide and manganese, which help the paint dry fasterโperfect for lean underpainting layers. Burnt sienna also dries relatively fast, though usually slower than umber because it contains less manganese.
