Two centuries before doomscrolling, scrolling had standards.

Look closely at The Aldric where the scroll arm is doing considerably more than showing off. It sweeps out from the high back, curls tightly at the front, rests on a turned baluster support and continues visually into the sculpted leg below. The bowed crest and exposed timber rails repeat that controlled movement across the rest of the frame.

That is the clever bit, ornament and construction have been made almost impossible to separate. Even the drama is load-bearing✨

A fine thread of thought runs through this one🧵

On The Aldric, the taupe upholstery carries a fine, damask-like motif that refuses to announce itself all at once. At first glance, it reads almost as texture. Look again, and the pattern starts to do more of the talking.

Against the dark timber, curved crest, scrolling arms and turned supports, that subtlety becomes part of the design. The upholstery softens the chair’s formality, gives the frame contrast, and keeps the whole composition from tipping into ornament for ornament’s sake✨

History gave it the vocabulary.
Good design knew what to delete.

The Aldric by The Artage draws from early nineteenth-century classical furniture through its high back, scrolling arms, turned supports, dark timber and almost architectural symmetry. But it stops short of imitation. The seat is broader, the ornament is more disciplined, and the upholstered planes soften what could otherwise have become an overly ceremonial silhouette.

So the reference is there, unmistakably. Just without all the historical baggage✨

We often speak about keeping craft alive.
Perhaps the better question is whether we are giving it enough new places to live.

Sanganeri was never made to remain fixed to one moment in time. Its patterns moved through cloth, homes and generations long before they arrived here.

So when a fabric carrying that language finds its way onto a contemporary bench, it does not feel like an old craft being brought into the present. It feels more like the present making room for it.

The kind of scroll you’re actually supposed to stop at.

On The Callisto, the armrest sweeps forward before curling into a carved scroll and returning neatly into the wooden support below. That same period-inspired language continues through the rolled crest, shaped seat rail and cabriole legs, giving the frame its sense of movement without tipping into excess.

The upholstery is tailored closely to the structure, with a high padded back, a generous cushioned seat and fine piping that keeps the silhouette crisp rather than overstuffed. Against the dark-polished wood, the softness of the upholstery makes the carving read even more clearly.

It is a chair built around the idea that detail should not sit on top of the design. It should be the design.

The Callisto comes from a school of furniture where a curve had to earn its place.

Its references lie in classical English furniture, but the interest is less in period ornament than in how the chair is built. The dark-polished wooden frame is shaped continuously through a rolled crest, sweeping arms that resolve into carved scrolls, a gently bowed apron and cabriole front legs. Each change in direction feels structural rather than added for effect.

The upholstery follows that same discipline. A generously cushioned seat and tall padded back are tailored closely to the frame, with fine piping tracing the edges so the woodwork remains part of the silhouette rather than disappearing beneath the fabric.

A traditional chair, perhaps. But one whose best ideas are still very much in circulation.

This is what happens when a chair is drawn with a wrist, not a ruler.

From the rolled crest to the scroll arms and cabriole legs, almost nothing resolves in a straight line. The frame rises, turns, narrows and curls, borrowing the fluid vocabulary of period furniture without becoming overly ornate.

Seen from the side, that becomes especially clear. The back eases gently away from the seat, the arms project forward, and the legs complete a silhouette that feels less assembled than continuously drawn.
