Makrana marble has been mined for over 2,000 years, making it one of India's oldest quarries.

Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal was likely the first monument to use Makrana marble, and the marble was transported to Agra by bullock carts, camels, and elephants.

Name origin
The town of Makrana is said to be named after the 1,800 artisans who came from the coastal strip of Makran in southern Beluchistan.

Mining contractor
Paharkhan is believed to have been the contractor who excavated marble from Makrana. One of the mining ranges is still known as Paharkua.

Marble bands
The marble in the Makrana area is found in five steeply-dipping bands that are part of the Ajmer Formation of the Delhi Supergroup.
