ABM (formerly ABM Architects) is a Mumbai based Architecture & Interior Design Firm. Alfaz Miller established ABM Architects soon after achieving his Bachelor of Architecture from J.J. School of Architecture in 1972; his daughter Aahana Miller now manages the practice. Aahana Miller, completed her Master of Architecture at The University of Pennsylvania

with a Minor in Historic Preservation. She also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture from Rhode Island School of Design. The firm has evolved with changing times and has a young work force, guided by experienced professionals in the core team. ABM's wide experience spans major institutional and corporate projects, private buildings, offices, airports, hotels, health, residential spaces, heritage and conservation work. The firm enjoys a reputation for architecture and design solutions that are varied, comprehensive, and most importantly, client-focused. Every ABM creation aims to integrate a timeless aesthetic with functional design, an objective that has been at the core of the firm’s culture since its inception. ABM’s design excellence has been acclaimed by the many awards and citations it has received. Client satisfaction has always been the firm's principle objective - its success measured by the fact that 80% of ABM’s projects originate from loyal clients. It has consciously chosen to remain a boutique design firm undertaking selected projects at a time. This helps the firm stay focused on the work at hand, paying attention to detail and be accessible to the client at all times. The firm evaluates wide-ranging ideas from the client, the project team and the consultants. This is made possible by ABM’s highly-efficient infrastructure within its own office space at Prabhadevi in the heart of the city, which houses multiple teams working collaboratively on several projects. The skilled and collaborative workforce of 25 in-house architects, designers, 3D visualizers and engineers, is well-supported by competent structural and service consultants. ABM collaborates with skilled MEPF engineers (Mechanical, Engineering, Plumbing and Firefighting) who work closely with the architects and interior designers to deliver comprehensive services to each project.

The Office with A View

Workstations
An oak laminate forms the base of all workstations and partitions, which gives the office a lighter look. The workstations are customized with a writing board, softboard, along with fluted glass in front and a Corian trim. The softboard orange complements the orange in the carpet.

Meeting Rooms
Each meeting space follows a theme, such as for the Taj Boardroom, the space is designed in congruence with the brand guidelines which are regal and traditional.
The Vivanta meeting room follows the purple theme of the brand as can be seen in the carpet and fabric wall paneling. A darker veneer is used in these more premium areas.
The SeleQtions private dining room has a large gold Q whereas the other dining space Ginger, has a graphic wall decal. In both these dining rooms a metal and Corian planter shelf is created on the window sill.

The Office with A View

Entrance
The lift lobby is designed using a graphic marble floor complemented with a subtle white and grey marble wall. As one enters the office, there is no traditional reception, only a waiting space for visitors. The visitor gets a glimpse of the ocean through the glass. The space is made vibrant with the use of rust and blue upholstery and area rug.

The Office with A View {First Look 👀}

Project details:
Location: Nariman Point, Mumbai, India
Completed: September 2023 Area: 10,000 sq. ft.

Client's brief: To relocate their offices on the 6th floor to the 10th floor, with a refreshed look and feel, keeping in mind the design ethos of their current offices on the 9th floor.

The Indian Hotels Company Limited invited ABM to design their new headquarter offices on the 10th floor of Express Towers at Nariman Point in Mumbai. ABM had previously designed their offices on the 9th & 6th floors.

The client asked that we identify key design elements of the 9th floor that we could carry to the 10th floor, however introduce new design trends and materials that would create a refreshed look. They also asked us to repurpose as much of the furniture and other items like the blinds, from the 6th floor so that it would not be wasted. Each and every element is customized and unique to the space.

Keeping the client’s requirements in mind, we established the layout with the same arrangement as the lower floors: Large cabins in the four corners supplemented by small cabins, workstations on the North and South, with the dining on the East and the reception, main meeting rooms and MD’s area on the West facing the sea. All sides of the office have spectacular views, if not of the sea, then of Mumbai city.

Extra requirements were added such as private dining rooms that doubled up as meeting rooms, a wellness zone, a community table for informal discussions.
The artwork is customized and exhibits architectural monuments in India.

The Reserved Lounges
VVIP Lounges at Bangalore International Airport, T2

Bathrooms
The bathrooms can have a unique design with their own set of materials and color palette. We used a green ceramic tile as a highlighter with a neutral wallpaper backdrop. The bathrooms are fully equipped with a shower; one of the two is designed to be accessible.

Private Lounge
The Private Lounge being an isolated space in the larger lounge, we proposed the use of a more subtle color palette; a combination of grey, beige and lighter tones. While the foreground might be neutral the backdrop or one wall can be the highlighter of the space. The threshold of the space is a specially designed fluted glass partition with a custom metal framework.

Main Lounge
The curved sofa seats are the main feature of the space creating comfort and privacy in an otherwise open floor plan. With the curved sofas various seating arrangements have been used for variety and maximum efficiency. All the furniture is custom designed and fabric colors of green and rust red are used.

The Entrance
A concrete finish forms the backdrop of the reception with foliage hung behind a sculptural table to create an interesting entrance space. Adjacent to the entrance, a tree feature wall forms a partition to create privacy yet allows one to see through into the lounge from the entrance.

New Project: The Reserved Lounges
VVIP Lounges at Bangalore International Airport, T2

Project details:
Location: Bangalore, India
Completed: January 2023
Area: Arrival Lounge- 3000 ft., Departure Lounge- 2500 sft.

The inspiration of this lounge began from the design of Terminal 2. We found that the color palette and materials used are tactile, light, verdant and sustainable. Keeping that in mind and the users of these lounges, a similar look and feel continues into the Reserved Lounges.

Since the lounges are in the interior of the terminal, there isn’t any natural light. The attempt is to create the feeling of outdoors in an indoor space. The main challenge we faced was to create a verdant space in an artificial environment. This is done using a predominantly green color palette set against a lighter backdrop.

The lounge flooring is a white marble with striking book matched grey streaks. Bamboo flooring is used to define private zones in the lounge. Customized loose rugs are placed to break up the continuous flooring.

We played with different wall finishes and paneling from a concrete texture paint to different wallpapers, veneer paneling, MDF patterned paneling, to a brick pattern that is an extension of the terminal. All the metal elements are solid brass.

The Departure Lounge has a metal screen partition; this was carefully designed to conceal floating columns in the center of the space. While both lounges use the same design elements, the loose cushions are exclusive to each.

Lighting plays an important role in the space; with the use of custom designed decorative lights as well as downlights a certain mood is created.

All elements including the signage are designed by us and customized by the contractor. The artwork used are original works or prints by eminent Bangalore based artists.

We are getting a hang of creating beautiful axons of our projects :)
Really enjoyed modelling the 080 Lounge at Bangalore International Airport T1 using Revit. With the basic model in place we had a bit of fun adding different types of people, food and plants into the space.
What do you think?
