Group of Paintings depicting Costumes, Trades and Castes, Patna Company School

A decorative set of twelve mica paintings depicting costumes, trades and castes. Such paintings on mica (talc) were created by Patna artists in the Company style primarily for European patrons in the mid-late 19th century.

Mica or talc is a form of silicate that has the property of being splittable into thin sheets of varying degrees of transparency, a technique long used in India. Artists specialising in painting on mica used clear bright colours painting popular subjects including occupations and festivals.

Panjurli (Boar), Coastal Karnataka

A fine painted wood figure of a standing boar in the folk bhuta style of coastal Karnataka. It displays a typical stylised form, its body is painted black with white stippling, large eyes, prominent tusks and adorned with an ornamental red and yellow jhool (saddle cloth).

In Tulu Nadu, hordes of boars often invaded and destroyed the cultivated lands so the farmers started worshipping and giving offerings to Panjurli, the spirit in the form of a boar, thinking that this would appease his mood and thus keep the wild animals away from their fields.

Covered Lacquer Flower Vase, Pagan (Burma)

An unusual covered flower case decorated with nàn-dwìn court scene. The nàn-dwìn consists of a king holding court along with queens, nobles, ministers, generals and other dignitaries. The monarch is resplendent in full Kon-baung court costume. In between the two court scenes is a vignette from the Jataka tale of Prince Vessantara who is depicted giving alms atop the great elephant. Another episode from the same story is depicted at the bottom of the vase.

Burmese lacquerware has deep connections with India through the Nattukottai Chettiars who brought back lacquerware boxes, plates and trays which were then handed down generation after generation.

Followers of the Sun, Gond painting by Venkat Raman Singh Shyam

Born in 1970 in the village of Sijhora, Venkat attended school until he reached the sixth standard, at which point he dropped his studies so as to accompany his father to Dindori, where his father worked as a peon at a local school. It was there at the age of nine, Venkat first remembers meeting his Uncle Jangarh, who at the time was enrolled in a government-run vocational programme. Initially Venkat’s artistic efforts were limited to sketches in pencil and coal, but after being encouraged by Jangarh, he began experimenting with his style while also apprenticing for Jangarh. In 1988 he joined Bhajju Shyam on a trip to Pondicherry to meet Hervé Perdriolle of the Outsider Gallery to whom Venkat sold five paintings. Other opportunities followed and over the years he has exhibited his works in various art galleries in Delhi and Mumbai.

Our History Part 8: 2021

Over the years, we’ve had the pleasure and privilege of meeting and serving our many patrons – collectors, scholars, curators, architects and so many more. We realise that none of this would have been possible without your continuing patronage, trust, and support. We would like to sincerely thank every one of you as we embark on the journey towards our next milestone.

Phillips new flagship store, exploring the past but looking towards the future.

Our aim was to balance history and modernity by juxtaposing contemporary design details and finishes with antique pieces.

The space was designed by .Studio who used the impressive gothic architecture as their key inspiration. They stripped down the space to its bones, exposing the original brick jack arches and used the inherent herringbone pattern of the beams & columns to guide the zoning and display.

Our History Part 7: 2020

When the pandemic hit last year, we took a moment to contemplate our future. Our flagship store has always been central to our business. With people at home and restrictions on travel and movement, we turned to technology to bridge the gap. We relaunched our website which now serves as a repository of our collection and started a monthly newsletter with our favourite new arrivals.

We also tried to define the essence behind our shopping experience. In the past, we took pride in being able to showcase a wide variety of artefacts and antiquities in our store. But with changing design aesthetics we recognised the need to update our store's core shopping experience.

To do so we approached .studio founded by and to redesign our iconic space. As part of the fifth-generation, Sanna was surrounded by antiquities and art and took to interior designing. Having grown up in and around our store, she instinctively understood our vision and with the help of her partner Ashni brought out that vision.

Our History Part 6: 2000s

In the early 2000s we renovated our iconic store putting in the red and blue compass tiling that many of our patrons grew to love and remember.

We also launched Phillips Images specialising in high quality re-prints of old Indian lithographs, maps and photographs. This initiative was spearheaded by Muneera Daya, Farooq’s sister Who realised the importance of making these early visualisations of India accessible to a larger audience, many of whom are deeply interested in India’s history but are unable to source or afford the scarce originals.
