I often think the reason we decorate with birds, botanicals and pieces inspired by nature is because we never quite want to leave it behind.

After a morning walk through the countryside, there is always that feeling of wanting to bring a little of it home with you. The birdsong, the changing seasons, the colours of the landscape, the sense of calm.

Perhaps that is why i find these plates feel so appealing. They capture those moments so beautifully, allowing a little of the outdoors to remain with us long after we’ve stepped back inside.

The happiest homes have always done this so well — blurring the line between house and garden, and filling rooms with reminders of the natural world we love 💕

I have always loved the way blue and white seems to make a room feel settled.

Perhaps it is because these pieces have been finding their way into homes for generations.

A plate collected on an English countryside trip, a vase inherited from family, flowers from the summer garden and placed on a dresser for everyone to enjoy. They become part of daily life so naturally that it is hard to imagine the room without them.

Blue and white has been part of British interiors for centuries, admired for its ability to sit comfortably alongside almost anything. Country houses, townhouses, modern homes and old cottages alike.

Some things simply never lose their place.

There has always been a romance to birds in interiors.

Perched amongst books, on mantelpieces and tucked into shelves, they bring a sense of life and curiosity to a room, as though they have simply paused there for a moment.

These hand-painted Royal Crown Derby Birds of Paradise are filled with colour, character and extraordinary detail, their gold decoration catching the light beautifully throughout the day.

The most meaningful collections are rarely built all at once.

They are gathered slowly, piece by piece, until they become part of the story of you and your home.

A pair that is rather difficult not to smile at.

This Royal Crown Derby charming cheetah and cub capture something wonderfully tender. The warm golden tones, delicate hand painted detailing and touches of real soft gold catch the light beautifully, bringing the figures to life.

Decorative, playful and quietly luxurious, they feel equally at home amongst books, on a mantelpiece or as part of a carefully gathered collection. ✨

Perhaps that is how every collection begins — with one piece that simply makes you happy. We would be delighted to help you start yours!!

Thinking of a time when India was discovered through the eyes of artists, travellers and engravers.

From the Fort of Gwalior to palaces, temples and monuments scattered across the Indian landscape, these engravings reveal a world that fascinated visitors from across Europe.

Long before travel was commonplace and cameras found their way into every hand, scenes such as these were carried home as souvenirs of wonder, introducing distant audiences to the grandeur and romance of India.

Printed over a century ago, they offer a glimpse not only of India’s architectural beauty, but of how these remarkable places were seen and admired by those who journeyed across the subcontinent long before modern travel.

Some of these monuments remain much the same today. Others have changed with time. Yet these prints remain beautiful records of a country whose architectural treasures have inspired generations.

How many of these remarkable places have you visited?

Have you seen them all?

There is something beautifully theatrical about old European jewellery.
Deep garnet tones, softly aged metals, hand-set stones catching the light in a gentler way — pieces that feel as though they once belonged to candlelit dinners, opera evenings and beautifully dressed homes.

Jewellery with mood, memory and a quiet sense of occasion.

The human desire to bring nature indoors has always found its way onto unique objects in the most beautiful ways.

Woodland birds, wild game, soft earthy colours and scenes inspired by the English countryside — Spode captured the outdoors with such warmth that even today these plates feel wonderfully at home in modern interiors.

Gathered together as a gallery wall, they become something guests naturally pause to admire.

We would recommend them in dining rooms, or along a corridor leading from kitchen to dining — places where people naturally slow down, gather and linger a little longer.

There has always been a romance to objects gathered through travel.

During the Grand Tour, long before interiors became fast or formulaic, collectors returned from Florence, Rome and Venice with fragments of the classical world — engravings, portraits, plaster medallions, painted scenes and decorative curiosities already softened by age and time. They were collected for atmosphere, memory, and as a way of bringing that feeling of history and beauty back into the home.

And perhaps that desire has never really left us.

The softness of faded gilt, the symmetry of plaster reliefs, romantic landscapes, cherubs and natural studies layered together — objects gathered over time rather than matched in a moment. Each piece carrying its own passage of time, yet becoming part of a larger conversation once placed together. A feeling of age, patina and beauty that has always drawn people in.

A gallery wall should never feel overly designed. The most beautiful ones feel discovered naturally, almost accidentally, as though the home itself evolved with you over time.

At Modern House of Antiques, we love helping clients build collection in their own way, mixing antique prints, paintings, plates and decorative objects, borrowing gently from Renaissance classicism, English country houses and the old Grand Tour tradition, while allowing each collection to feel deeply personal to the people living with it.

Some rooms are beautifully decorated, Others are composed over time ✨

There’s a subtle difference you begin to notice over time with antiques.

These 18th century hand-coloured prints weren’t made to keep up with anything.
No deadlines, no pressure to produce more, no need to outpace trends.
Just time, patience… and a certain attention that feels almost unfamiliar today.

You see it in the softness of the colour,
in the way each bird, each detail, sits so gently on the paper—nothing overworked.

And perhaps that’s why we keep returning to them.

Even now, when so much is being created around us,
it’s often these older works that hold us a little longer.
They come from a world where things were meant to be enjoyed slowly,
where the process mattered as much as the result.

Collecting them isn’t just about owning something old.
It’s about keeping a part of that way of thinking close;
where beauty was given time, and made simply because it was worth making.

Royal Copenhagen has been shaping porcelain since 1775, in Denmark—where design was never about excess, but restraint, clarity, and living well with less. Each of its piece carries that same philosophy…. natural and considerate.

The blue you see here feels almost like it belongs to the pure northern sky itself soft, calm, and endlessly familiar. It’s the kind of blue that comes from long Nordic mornings, from clear air, from a way of life that values simplicity.

And that’s what stays with us.
