History of the Port:
The Shilaharas began the story. The Kadambas took it much further. And somewhere along the way, this once-important port almost disappeared from our memory.

Most of us associate Gopakapattana with the Kadambas. But its story actually began much earlier.

Before the Kadambas, the port was already active under the Shilaharas, developing as a regional trading centre for over two centuries.

When the Kadambas took over in the 11th century, they expanded what was already here. Under King Jayakeshi I, Gopakapattana grew into a major fortified port, connecting Goa with trade routes across the Indian Ocean.

Arabian horses arrived here, goods travelled in and out, and for centuries this shoreline must have been a very different place from the quiet stretch we see today.

Curious to picture Gopakapattana in its time? Have a look at our Story for a recreated glimpse of how the port may once have looked.

Wooden grain measures that lived in every Goan posro and market. There was a time when grain in Goa was measured with these familiar wooden measures. For many Goans, just seeing them brings back a certain nostalgia for a Goa that once was.
