Nagendra translates to "Lord of the Serpents" or "King of the Serpents". This name is often associated with Lord Shiva, who is depicted with serpents around his neck, symbolizing control over fear, death, and time. It can also refer to the divine serpent Shesha (Ananta), the king of all Nagas.

The trishul represents the three aspects of consciousness - waking, dreaming and sleeping, and in turn represents the three gunas- satva, rajas and tamas. Holding a trishul signifies that Shiva is above all the three states- waking, dreaming and sleeping, yet is the upholder of these three states.

As the mighty river Ganga prepared to descend from the heavens to Earth, her force threatened to flood and destroy everything in her path. Seeing this, King Bhagiratha prayed to Lord Shiva, the supreme yogi, to contain Ganga’s immense energy. Deep in meditation atop Mount Kailash, Shiva heard the plea and allowed the celestial river to cascade onto his matted locks. With his divine power, he tamed the wild torrents, letting only a gentle stream flow down, ensuring a smooth and life-giving descent.

This sacred act symbolizes Shiva’s role as the divine protector and the controller of cosmic energy. His meditative stillness balanced Ganga’s overwhelming force, teaching that true strength lies in inner mastery and control. The arrival of Ganga, purified through Shiva’s hair, brought fertility and prosperity to the land, marking the beginning of one of the holiest rivers in India, revered for its spiritual and life-giving essence.
