Recently, I got a chance to speak to original warli artisan from malhar-koli tribe of Maharashtra- Sandeep Bhoir ji. A short conversation with him was like turning the pages of encyclopaedia of an entire tribe and cultural.

Some excerpts of my conversation with him:

Did you know?

Long before geometry entered Indian classrooms…
Long before rulers, protractors, and theorems…

The Warli tribe was already speaking the language of geometry.

The circle.
The triangle.
The square.

Not as mathematical abstractions — but as living symbols.

In Maharashtra, the Warli community has been creating this sacred visual language for over 2,500–3,000 years, with roots often traced back to around 1000 BCE.

The circle represents the sun and the moon.
The triangle reflects mountains and trees.
The square (chowk) marks sacred ground — often drawn during weddings and rituals as a space where divine energy is invited.

This isn’t decorative art.
It is ritual. It is memory. It is cosmology.

Formal geometry as a structured mathematical discipline evolved in India through texts like the Sulba Sutras (around 800–500 BCE) — ancient Vedic manuals that described geometric principles for constructing altars.

Isn’t it beautiful?

While scholars were codifying geometry in scriptures…
Warli artists were living it on mud walls — intuitively, spiritually, culturally.

Their art was never about symmetry for aesthetics.
It was about balance in life.
It was about community.
It was about marking births, marriages, harvests — every sacred turning of time.

Geometry was not introduced to them.
It was always within them.

And that is the quiet genius of indigenous knowledge.

The more I explore Warli, the more I realise — it is not just an art form, it is a philosophy.

A circle for the sun and moon.
Triangles for mountains and trees.
And human figures drawn almost identically — because in the larger design of life, we are all part of one rhythm.

There is humility in this art.
There is community.
There is balance.

As I worked on this wall, I kept thinking about how modern life complicates everything — yet these simple lines capture celebration, labour, love, and togetherness so effortlessly.

Perhaps the lesson is this:
We do not need more noise.
We need more roots. 🌿
