In this new vocabulary of “Scripted Silence” smooth surfaces were replaced by organic textures, processed industrial paper gave way to handmade bases and rigid lines turned into sinuous expressions of the Rām Nām. This intense period of creation was not mere “practice” of art, but a continuous act of prayer. Each work was a heartfelt offering. With the completion of every piece, she would ask herself - What is next? What more can I offer?

Being inspired by the ancient and revered landscape of Chitrakoot, she has created handmade paper infused with haldi, chandan, gangajal and various found objects like old manuscripts, coins and sacred threads. In Whispers of Script and Cave Scripture: The Tree That Spoke, in which the paper resembles ancient relics made from barks. Arranged within these pieces are various devotional elements like – Rām Nām or a couplet or a paduka.

Gitanjali also takes the opportunity to invoke the divine entities who embody the perfect union of bhakti in the larger narrative of Rām consciousness. Jatayu: Valor captures the poignant moment of Jaṭāyu with his wings clipped, yet unbroken spirit, epitomizing courage in the service of righteousness. In Runic Imprint, the name of Rām is inscribed, resonating with the vibrational essence of the Divine, with a coin embedded, bearing the image of mighty Hanumānji, symbolising his devotion of Rām.

With Scripted Silence, Gitanjali Kashyap explored a new vocabulary where rigid lines turned into sinuous expressions of the Rām Nām. Through varied intensities of the written script, she created depth and contour in her work.

The aerial view of Ayodhya had captivated her from the moment she saw it. She found her home in this holy land imbued with divine presence. This is reflected in Tectonics of Devotion, a meticulous Rām Nām script in varied intensities of charcoal and graphite tracing the ancient terrains; interspaced by patches of gold foils marking the glistening waters of the sacred river Sarayu. Similarly, The Ghat is Everywhere is a topographic representation of Chitrakoot, where engraved letters delineate the rugged land, and through which the blue waters of Mandakini river traverses in a rhythmic dance.

Continuing with her exploration of paper, Gitanjali adopted different techniques of imprinting – like erasures and engraving against a charcoal base. The precision of these works not only reflect her mastery in the medium, but also shows the devotion with which she stamps the sacred script. In Skirt of Parchment, Rām Nām appears like an ancient edict, echoing the lineage through which this sacred word has been handed down. In The Dune Strings, the script breaks open into its constituent letters. While in Birds In and Out of Silence the same letters break free and fly off, as if the clutter of the script is gradually yielding to the clarity of silence.

Whatever we do—through body, speech, and mind—is ultimately an offering to the divine.
“Scripted Silence” by Gitanjali Kashyap is born from years of deep devotion, where the sacred sound Ram becomes a space of meditation and artistic expression. Each scripted letter reflects the union of kāyā–vācā–manasā—action, voice, and thought—flowing together in harmony.
For her, Ram is not just a word, but the light, the form, and the essence that guides her entire creative journey
