As Hemendra Pujari, curator and founder of Shyam Arts, opens up about the finesse of traditional brushes, he reveals the raw struggles behind every stroke, brushes made from a single perfect strand, pigments ground by hand, and the unwavering patience required to paint details smaller than a grain of rice.

These are not just techniques;
they are windows into centuries of Indian artistic discipline.

From understanding the fragility of raw materials to preserving the purity of ancient methods, Shyam Arts continues to honour the legacy of miniature painting by documenting every unseen effort behind the masterpiece.

Ceremonial Inspection on Dussehra – Udaipur Court Scene during Maharana Bhupal Singh’s Reign

This grand painting captures the final ceremonial event of Dussehra at the Udaipur court — the inspection of royal horses and elephants in the courtyard before the City Palace. Following the Khejari Puja and Durbar, the Maharana, seated on a gaddi at the Naharon ka Darikhana (terrace), presides over the spectacle as bards (Charans) recite compositions.

Nine exquisitely adorned horses and five richly caparisoned elephants from the royal stables are presented for inspection, amidst a gathering of courtiers, nobles, and a British-style military band. After the inspection, the Maharana ceremonially dismisses the nobles by offering bira (betel leaf) and retires, marking the festival's conclusion with fireworks and a single shot from each state cannon.

This naturalistically rendered artwork is one of the finest from Bhupal Singh’s reign, showcasing the eastern ranges of the City Palace and believed to be among the last of Udaipur’s court painting tradition.

This old bronze Nagkanya, with hands folded in reverence, sits gracefully beside a bookend carved from Khuti stone, salvaged from an old haveli in Mewar.

An evocative pairing where mythology meets memory, and sculpture meets stillness.

A sacred ensemble graced with intricately hand-crafted vigrahas of Shri Ram, Lakshman, Sita, and Hanuman ji, sculpted from the finest Makrana marble, delicately hand-painted and adorned with traditional gold leafing.

The backdrop features a beautifully hand-embroidered Pichwai, adding depth and devotion to the setting. Placed upon a finely detailed cabinet, vintage silver and metal artefacts—diyas, bells, and chains—echo the spiritual essence and artistic heritage of India.

A grand visual composition that pays homage to India’s rich artisanal legacy.

At the center, a stunning mirror crafted from a reclaimed South Indian doorframe anchors the space. Flanking it are two intricately hand-carved vintage marble screens, adding both symmetry and texture. The wooden angels on either side are old Goan carvings, standing gracefully with timeworn elegance. Above, a series of repoussé white metal panels—each handcrafted—bring fine detailing and metallic contrast to the setting.
