Shweta’s desk is never without a notebook- filled with sketches, fragments of ideas, colour references, thoughts from travels, observations from everyday life. And, inevitably, a little of her beloved dog-Ponyo’s fur. For her, the analogue and the instinctive have always come first; no matter how digital life becomes, she returns to pen and paper, to the slow accumulation of detail that eventually becomes a collection.​

Growing up in the mountains of Uttarakhand taught her early that not everything can be controlled or rushed. At her brand SWGT, that understanding runs through everything- the slow processes, the handcraft, the working relationship with artisans and natural materials and the willingness to let each piece evolve on its own terms.​

Niharika Rajput’s ( ) desk is wherever her work takes her- a wire-and-paper corner, a research-filled studio, a rocky hillside in Saspochey, Ladakh, where she has built an entire exhibit from what the landscape offers. As a wildlife artist, her sculptures begin months before a single feather is cut-in outreach to scientists, in gathered measurements, in a slowly building visual archive. Her tools travel with her: a nose plier, a Swiss knife, brushes, binoculars, a notepad.​

Zoya Khan’s ( ) desk is surprisingly analogue in a digital world- sheets of paper, tracing paper, a fountain pen, a small pot of black ink. For her, ideas don’t arrive on a screen; they arrive through the movement of the hand. And always, somewhere on the desk, a piece of Kashmiri papier-mâché, an anchor to her identity as a Kashmiri karigar, as she refers to herself, a reminder that the questions she returns to most often- of belonging, memory, and identity- are sometimes answered not through words, but through making.​

Growing up in Kashmir, the mountains were a constant presence, shaping both the landscape and the imagination. They taught her that the strongest design decisions are rarely the most forceful ones -that understanding comes gradually, and that places often know more than we do.​

For Shivya Nath, travelling has often meant stepping into the unknown. Journeying across the world as a solo traveller exposed her not only to unfamiliar places but also to questions far bigger than herself.

“What is our shared humanity? What connects us? What does the environmental urgency look like in different parts of the world? What are the ways that communities are building resilience to these?” These reflections shape her latest book, examining the choices we make in an increasingly uncertain world.

The mountains offered stillness to sit with these questions. Living in a small village in Himachal Pradesh, she found herself immersed in a slower rhythm of life that nurtured both creativity and introspection.

“I could sit there and watch the world outside my window change from snow-dusted hills, to young green wheat fields, to wild cherry blossoms, to golden maize harvests, and it so happened that several seasons later, I finished the first draft of my manuscript.”

In tropical forests, the setting sun is not a sign of retreat for wildlife, but rather the moment it truly comes alive. Among these nocturnal creatures are fireflies.

Measuring a mere inch, these insects collectively light up the entire forest canopy. Their presence has captured human imagination for centuries, with poets like Kalidasa describing their illumination as a true “idea of enchantment”.

They have long stood as symbols of resilience, hope, and inner light. By moving collectively, they transform a dark, vulnerable night into a shared journey, proving that we too can navigate the unknown by relying on our inner guidance and each other.

Made by the Mountains is a series that spotlights the material culture of everyday objects born in the hills— revealing how the highland landscape, human endurance and traditions have guided their design over time.

Few discoveries have shaped human life as profoundly as fire. A source of warmth, light, and sustenance, it has been central to how communities lived, gathered, and endured the elements.

Across India’s mountainous regions, this relationship evolved into distinctive forms. In response to long winters and rugged landscapes, communities transformed a universal need into objects of enduring utility.
