Réttir season is here! 🐑🍂

Every autumn, the sheep are gathered from the mountains and brought into the réttir, where farmers, families and friends come together to sort the flocks.

These photos were taken at Reykjaréttir á Skeiðum, one of the many réttir taking place around Iceland this time of year. Réttir are an important part of Icelandic farming culture and a sure sign that autumn has arrived.

The Icelandic sheep is one of the world's oldest and purest breeds. Protected by centuries of isolation, it has remained almost unchanged since the first settlers arrived over 1,100 years ago. As the sheep adapted to Iceland's rugged climate, so did its wool.

Nature created the perfect balance. A soft inner layer keeps warmth close to the body, while the long outer fibres shed rain and resist the wind. Together, they create a wool that is remarkably light, naturally breathable, and exceptionally warm.

This is the wool that has sheltered generations of Icelanders through changing seasons and demanding weather. It is the same wool that our members transform, stitch by stitch, into every handknitted lopapeysa.
