LAKE COMO DESIGN FESTIVAL

_ In Minor Keys

The importance of storytelling _ San Lazzaro degli Armeni

During my recent visit to Venice for the Biennale, I finally had the chance to visit the island of San Lazzaro degli Armeni, whose history had always intrigued me. How could such a small piece of land, surrounded by water, have become such an important centre for Armenian culture — and, more broadly, for international culture?

During the visit, led by a historian and researcher, I experienced first-hand the power of storytelling: the kind of storytelling that goes deeper and makes you look differently at objects you might otherwise have passed by without noticing. Let me give you an example.

The Cantonese Puzzle Ball is a 20 cm sphere carved from ivory, displayed on a shelf alongside other artefacts. Would I have noticed it? Probably not. Not particularly catchy or “Instagrammable”… (in fact no picture of it)

But learning that its concentric spheres were carved from a single block of ivory, and that the master craftsman may have spent 20 years carving it, completely changed my perception of the object.

Would we dedicate 20 years of our lives today to creating a 20 cm sculpture?

The same applies to the extraordinary collection of handwritten books preserved on the island. We might easily look at them as mere “curiosities” from a distant past. Instead, they bear witness to entire foundations of our culture that could have been lost.

They survived because these monks, living on a small abandoned island, first devoted themselves to transcribing them, and later to printing and disseminating them — recognising, among the first, the importance of the new technology of printing for the survival of an entire culture.

Perhaps this is one of the roles of storytelling: not simply to tell us what we are looking at, but to give us the context that allows us to truly see it.

And perhaps, in design too, the story behind an object is sometimes what makes us look at it differently.

Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design -Astino

I have known Simona Maschii since the time we were both working on our master thesis with Ezio Manzini. Although we rarely meet in person - she lives in Copenhagen most of the time - we have continued to follow each other’s work and paths over the years.

So I recently went to visit her in Astino: partly for friendship, but also out of curiosity, to experience this educational project in such a peculiar setting.

The Institute is located next to an 11th-century monastery, in a quiet, green valley just a few kilometres from Bergamo. To reach the school, you walk the last 300 metres through the landscape. And once there, the atmosphere is one of remarkable calm and focus.

What interest me most were the students’ projects and the questions they were addressing: social, cultural and ethical challenges ranging from improving interactions between immigrants and municipal employees, to supporting women during perimenopause; from protecting and promoting water resources, to developing solutions for dogs experiencing blindness.

Different issues, different perspectives, students from different parts of the world, all using design as a tool to investigate and respond to real-life challenges.

It made me think about the role of context in design education.

Could stepping away from the noise, speed and constant stimulation of the city actually help us think differently? Could a quieter environment create the conditions for deeper observation, concentration and more meaningful solutions?

In my own teaching experience, I increasingly feel that the ability to focus on a problem has become one of the most difficult skills to develop in a generation that is hyper-connected and constantly exposed to stimuli.

Creating spaces for concentration is itself becoming an important part of education — and, more broadly, of design.

A very interesting experiment, both for what happens inside the school and for the place that surrounds it.
