Osvaldo Borsani has always preferred to define himself as a planner, not a designer. A passionate and curious man, since his beginnings at the family business (ABV - Arredamenti Borsani di Varedo), he has shown an irrepressible vocation towards everything that is avant-garde, technology and innovation. Having become the best interpreter of the Milanese bourgeoisie, he launched himself towards industrial production with the foundation of Tecno in 1953.

Osvaldo Borsani was born in 1911 in Varedo, Italy, and studied Fine Arts at the Brera Academy, and architecture at the Polytechnic of Milan, where he graduated in 1936. During his studies, Borsani participated in the fifth edition of the Triennale with his Casa project Minima, which earned him the silver medal. He also soon began to help his father Gaetano with the family business, Atelier Varedo, designing and producing furniture with a European Art Deco influence. In 1932 the factory changed its name to Arredamento Borsani, and opened its first shop in Milan; in this period Borsani began to collaborate with Milanese artists such as Lucio Fontana, Agenore Fabbri, Arnaldo, and Gio Pomodoro.

In 1953 Osvaldo and his twin brother Fulgenzio founded TECNO, a company known for its technological and scientific approach to furniture production. Prominent designs made by TECNO include the D70 sofa from 1954, which can be positioned in up to twenty different ways; the P40 chaise longue from 1955, with adjustable armrests and backrest, and movable parts; and the 1968 Graphis office system, created by Borsani and Eugenio Gerli.

In 1970 Borsani introduced the Tecno Project Center, together with Marco Fantoni and his daughter Valeria, an absolutely innovative design laboratory.

Stilnovo Ceiling Lamp, 1950, opaline glass and metal

Founded in 1946 by Bruno Gatta, Stilnovo made its first appearance in Domus, with two table lamps and a brass tray. In 1949, Bruno Gatta’s brother Paolo joined the company.
In 1947 participated in the VIII Triennale, by invitation of Piero Bottoni, presenting lamps and decorative metal art objects.
In 1951, Stilnovo exhibited again at the IX Triennale, in the lighting section curated by Achille, Livio and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, with six models of lamps, made mainly of metal and marble, two of which were later purchased by the Triennale to be used as prizes. Stilnovo also took part in the X Triennale, in 1954, obtaining the silver medal for an arm lamp.
In 1954 and 56 was nominated for the Compasso d’Oro and in the 50s and 60s collaborated with great architects and designers on various projects.
With Melchiorre Bega collaborated on two occasions: in 1960 to furnish, with the ceiling lamps designed by Gaetano Scolari, the boardroom of Torre Galfa and in the same year to illuminate the new conference room at Fiera Milano.
In 1963 Dino and Silvana Gatta, Bruno’s children, joined the company.
In 1969 the company image was renewed, by Italo Lupi and Giancarlo Iliprandi, redesigning the logo too.
In the 1970s Stilnovo continued to collaborate with great designers, producing some of its most important pieces. Despite its success, Stilnovo began to suffer in terms of sales and in 1986 it was purchased by the Finvetro group and then in 1988 by the Venini group, which attempted to relaunch it with new models until finally ending production in 1993, Year when Bruno Gatta passed away at the age of 79. Linea Light Group, acquired Stilnovo in 2019, restarting its production.

Pietro Chiesa descended from a distinguished Ticino family of artists, after an apprenticeship with the glassmaker Giannotti, he opened his own glass workshop in 1921. In the early 1920s, he participated in the Venice Biennale, the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and the exhibitions in Cologne and Barcelona. In his artistic production, he combined extreme modernity with great technical skill in the creation of his works.
In 1932, he was called by Gio Ponti to share the direction of the newly founded FontanaArte, a role that gave him the opportunity to express his full creativity, designing over a thousand different objects, including furniture, tables, lamps, stained glass windows, and art objects in general. Some of his most famous designs are still in production today, such as the curved Fontana table (1932), the Cartoccio vase (1932), and the Luminator floor lamp (1933).

Max Ingrand, whose full name was Maurice Max-Ingrand (Bressuire, 20 December 1908 – Paris, 25 August 1969), was a French glassmaker, decorator and designer.

He is known for having created the stained glass windows of numerous churches in France and abroad and for having been the artistic director of the Italian lamp company FontanaArte for over a decade, for which he designed some products that have remained in the history of design.

In 1954 he became artistic director of FontanaArte, then part of the Saint-Gobain group. He held the role for over a decade. in which he had the responsibility of supervising and approving all the company’s products, as well as designing many himself. In 1967 he left FontanaArte and founded his own company, Verre Lumière, among the first to produce halogen lamps.

Extraordinary and very rare dinner table in walnut by 1950 circa

Carlo De Carli was born into a middle-class family in Milan. After studying classical studies and graduating in architecture, he worked for a year in Gio Ponti's studio, where he later took over the chair of Interior Architecture, Furnishings, and Decoration at Politecnico di Milano University in 1962.

He created most of his architectural, exhibition, and design works from the postwar period to the early 1970s. His work as a designer, closely tied to theoretical thought, places the person at the center of the project, prioritizing the process of shaping spaces and objects rather than their very being, and embracing their mutual relationships.

This constant research drives him to create new forms, contributing to the renewal of taste and trends in Italian architecture and design.
