What if a lamp could dance?

In the latest chapter of What’s in a Lamp?, we turned light into poetic movement and theatrical poses through the work of multimedia artist David Szauder, a pioneer in using artificial intelligence as a tool for choreography, visual storytelling and image-making.

Szauder’s Ballet Mécanique is a direct homage to Fernand Léger's 1924 avant-garde film of the same name where Foscarini’s lamps come alive: they move, transform, evolve, caught somewhere between mechanical precision and free inspiration.

«Tools change,» Szauder says, «but artistic responsibility, intention and authorship remain human.» It's a conviction that runs through his book Glitches & Glory, and through a career that has taken him from gallery walls to the Hamburg Ballet stage, where his visual world for Wunderland left the screen to became something dancers could wear.

Discover David Szauder’s way of working with the latest technologies, his vision and the thinking behind his work for What’s in a Lamp? in the full interview on our web site: https://www.foscarini.com/en/david-szauder/

A lamp can illuminate a room.
Or it can transform it.

For What's in a Lamp?, Silvia Franchini imagined Foscarini lamps as domestic suns: luminous presences that transform everyday moments into small universes of their own.

Reading, drawing, listening to music, sharing a meal, spending time together — under Foscarini’s lamps, the ordinary becomes something extraordinary. Because when we are completely immersed in something we enjoy, the space around us changes too.

This is the world Silvia created for Foscarini: one where light becomes part of the story.

What if a lamp could become something you wear?

For What's in a Lamp?, illustrator Enrico Focarelli Barone — known as Frelly — transforms Foscarini lamps into hats worn by women from around the world. Not decorative objects, but living presences that reshape silhouettes and redefine the space around those who wear them.

With a limited color palette, broad swaths of flat color, and figures poised between reality and imagination, Frelly builds suspended moments where form speaks before the story does. Each illustration is born from a feeling, a detail, an intuition — and lets itself be guided from there.

Which lamp would you wear?

This year at the Fuorisalone, Foscarini Spazio Monforte hosted two projects that reflect its passion for research.

The first one is a celebration. Twiggy turns 20 and to mark the anniversary of Marc Sadler’s bestsleller Ferruccio Laviani has created an installation that returns to the lamp’s founding image: a fisherman, patient and unhurried, his rod planted in the sand. That single, quiet intuition was the origin of one of the most quietly revolutionary designs in contemporary lighting. A flat disc base - like the shadow a lampshade casts on a bright summer day - a line of carbon fibre that becomes a gestures in space and fibreglass that rises, curves, and carries light exactly where it needs to go. Twenty years later, resolved complexity still fascinates.

The second project is an open question. Intrecci di Luce / Knitted Light is Foscarini's act of pure research during the Fuorisalone: two designers, Jozeph Forakis and Lorenzo Palmeri, exploring knitwear as a material for light — each following their own instinct, each arriving somewhere entirely unexpected.

17/04/2026

THIS IS OUR MILAN DESIGN WEEK.

A week where research takes centre stage: knitwear, an ancient and familiar material, becomes two entirely different stories in the hands of two designers. Same thread, two instincts, two unexpected directions.

And a week to pause and ask: what makes a design object truly timeless? Twiggy turns 20 this year — and she's still the most lively lamp in the room. We think we know why.

A HOME THAT ALWAYS SURPRISES YOU

A beautiful home is one where there is always something to discover. Impossible? Think again. There is so much light can do in your interiors.

A designer lamp can transform an atmosphere - adding shade or focus, widening your gaze or drawing it gently toward a detail, gliding over smooth surfaces or revealing their texture.

As an illustrator who creates true scenographies and subtle narrations, Marianna Tomaselli knows this well. So under Le Soleil’s layered glow, a simple object becomes something worth contemplating by the house cat.

She builds her images as if they were part of a larger sequence. Each frame suggests that something happened before, and something may follow. Here, the action is minimal: a gaze, a pause, a circle of light quietly defining the floor.

What happens next is up to you.
But once you begin to see light this way, you may never look at your lamps in quite the same way again.

A home that surprises you is not one that keeps changing, but one that keeps revealing.

All it takes is a beam of light, and the willingness to pause.

A HOME WHERE YOU CAN LOVE

Hoba is a lamp to fall in love with. Its imperfect, meteorite-like form feels ancient and contemporary at once. It is a presence, rather than simply an object.

It comes as no surprise, then, to see a cat holding Hoba tightly, as if embracing a warm stone fallen from the sky. In the mirror behind, a couple leans in, caught in the second before a kiss.

Marianna Tomaselli is passionate about instants: the moments before revelation, where tension is felt more than shown. Can you feel love there, in that suspended pause?

The lamp and the cat together become the silent catalysts of this intimate, almost cinematic scene. They bring warmth without over-defining the story.

Because love, like light, doesn’t need to be loud.
It needs space. Possibility. Imperfections that feel precious precisely because they are uniquely ours.

Who would you hold close, when the light turns on?

A HOME WHERE MAGIC OCCURS

A cat sits upright, staring at Uto.
From the Foscarini lamp, tiny stars begin to fall, or perhaps to rise. On a nearby table, another cat sleeps peacefully, unaware.

Nothing extraordinary is happening. And yet, everything feels possible.

For Marianna Tomaselli, creativity is not about inventing something completely new but about discovering unexpected possibilities in what already exists. And in our homes - everywhere - light becomes that possibility.

Beyond the beam, the space remains quiet and defined. Within it, reality softens. The ordinary shifts into something dreamlike.

The cat, as always in the Marianna Tomaselli’s series, is not there to explain the story, but to keep it open.

The cat watches the light and inhabits it, quietly. Because real magic doesn’t arrive with noise. It appears gently, like a small constellation forming in your living room.

What happens when your light starts conjuring dreams?

A HOME WHERE YOU CAN RELAX

Coming back to a home you love is like being met with a quiet hug: familiar, warm, and understanding.

This cat shows us how: curled high above, on the Plena ceiling lamp. A slightly daring choice, made possible by a home designed to be welcoming, where even the unexpected feels safe.

For Marianna Tomaselli, this sense of ease is built through restraint. Using a reduced palette, she lets colour support the light rather than compete with it: blues build atmosphere, warm light emerges, and red appears as a subtle, activating accent.

Foscarini lamps share this same balance: innovative in design, effortless in presence, made to belong in everyday life.

Because a home where you can relax is a home that lets you be.

Where would you like to be, when the light turns on and the day gently fades out?

A HOME WHERE YOU CAN FEEL YOURSELF

A cat sits still, facing the Bahia lamp. Absorbed by its soft geometry and enveloping light, he drifts into a quiet moment of reflection.

For Marianna Tomaselli, this is where images come alive: an object and a presence that don’t describe a story, but hold one, leaving what happens next entirely up to us.

This scene feels like a reminder that the most beautiful homes aren’t the ones that follow trends or try to impress, but the ones that simply allow us to be.

Light gently defines space, creates closeness, and builds a subtle relationship between our truest selves and what surrounds us.

Do you have a place in your home that makes you feel like this?
