The exclusive sea side resort Forte dei Marmi or the city of Lucca are about 55min drive from the villa. Other towns are Massa and Carrara, approached by driving through some spectacular countryside with views over mountains and valleys. Castelnuovo is the centre of this beautiful area, and all around there are attractive medieval villages, the best known being Barga, where an opera Festival is held every summer. Nearby is the house of the poet Giovanni Pascoli. Other areas worth visiting include: Montecatini famous for its Spa Water and Casinos, and Florence about 1h 50min drive. If one wants to venture further such as the Islands of Elba, Isola di Giglio, Corsica or Sardegna, these can be reached from the harbour in Livorno 1h 50min drive away. Milan and Rome are about 3h 30min drive. There is a very good train service to all these destinations. If you relish the best in traditional Italian food, locally there are many excellent restaurants. In terms of sport facilities there is a gym 5min drive, tennis courts, indoor pool about 10min, horse riding and golf facilities about 20min. In winter there is the excellent ski resort of Abetone.
