This is a hospitality facility in Akakura, at the foot of Mt. Myoko. Set within a national park, it is the first new building in this area in over 70 years. The project required careful coordination with local residents, the Ministry of the Environment, and multiple authorities. Instead of following a linear design path, the form emerged by weaving together many considerations.
Snow-region architecture often defaults to familiar shapes shaped by long-standing local knowledge. Here, we challenged that convention by exploring whether a new prototype could exist. Through testing and iteration, we developed a multi-directional roof form that sheds snow naturally, flowing like a ridge line connecting mountain ranges. This project marks a first step toward creating architecture that brings renewed vitality and identity to the region.
妙高山の麓・赤倉温泉郷に建つホスピタリティ施設。国立公園内という特殊な条件から、地域としては約70年ぶりの新築となり、周辺住民や環境省、自治体との丁寧な調整が不可欠でした。デザインは直線的ではなく、さまざまな要素を紡ぎ合わせながら形づくられています。
豪雪地帯の建築は、長年の経験から一定の形に落ち着きがちですが、本計画ではあえて既成概念を超え、新たなプロトタイプの可能性を探りました。試行錯誤を重ね、山脈の稜線のように多方向へ雪が自重で流れ落ちる屋根形状に到達しました。
地域に新たな活気とアイデンティティをもたらす建築の第一歩となることを願っています。
